Ernie Ball Stingray - NAMM Bass of the Year

I bought a Special 4H from Sweetwater, and that single pickup, while sounding classic Stingray, wasn't deep enough for me. I swapped it (Sweetwater is awesome) for an identical 4HH and it is the shizz. This bass will pound a subwoofer.

So, you wouldn't say it lacks the low end compared to previous Stingrays, right? Just not enough low end for you without the neck pickup?

Wish it had a 1.5" nut width, but I do just fine with the Special as-is.

Thank god they don't. One of the reasons I love them is they don't have those skinny J necks.

Exactly. The Special 4H to me sounds exactly like other single pickup Stingrays, maybe with more control because of the middle tone control. The reason I didn't already have a Stingray was because I wanted a different kind of low end. All single pickup Stingrays, to my ear, sound something like a pre-amped bridge pickup. The 4HH is different. Not only do you get that classic SR sound with just the bridge pickup on, but many others. For example, you know that classic SR sound that Flea used on Aeroplane? It has that, but switch it to both pickups on, and it's that sound but doubled. IOW, it out-Stingrays a Stingray. :-)

To each his own I guess. My fave bass ever is a P with a J neck.

@Scott Ball I don't think there is another production line bass from any manufacturer, at this price that is built to the same level of fit, finish, and overall quality as the Stingray Special. I don't think there is an honest luthier in the world that would disagree.

Please do a run of Sterling 4 and 5 string specials in some equally cool colors. I would be all over a Sterling 5 Special!
