Esperanza Spalding on ACL

sounds like the neck pup soloed

Agreed on all counts. I very much enjoyed her performance, and had no idea she was so masterful on an electric. For the gearheads, it looked as if she was running her upright through an SWR California Blonde II, and the fretless Jazz Bass through an Eden head/410 cabinet. Her electric tone was interesting to me, rather more punchy than round. Plucky, in a way. Killer player and vocalist.

Wow! Her electric playing is sounding so good! When I first heard her I was blown away by her upright playing but lukewarm about her electric stuff, but she is killing it here. Such a relief to see someone playing a fretless jazz and not trying to sound like Jaco.

So good to hear someone not do the Jaco thing. She's actually got her own voice on electric......thank goodness. She brings her upright sound and style to the electric how refreshing. Gotta love it.

Esperanza is truly amazing, educated and musically articulate. She's been on a long tour and this is only her second album. There's so much more that she has to share with the world. I can't help but wonder what type of album she will write after the tour. However, I'm sure it will be incredible! Her lovable personality and great musical taste make her compositions timeless. I find it so refreshing that she plays with nothing to prove. She's not trying to shred or be musically radical. She simply focuses on making great music.

Just WOW! So talented. How can she sing like that and play those complex lines? And in the interview at the end - such a nice personality. Really enjoyable show. Thanks for posting this information. I'm a fan for life.

What kind of strings were those? They were light colored.

I've been an Esperanza fan/stalker for a while now. I remember watching every youtube video I could find while waiting for her latest album to arrive. I've caught her live 3 times so far and each time has been AMAZING. As you can see in the video she's spot on with vocals and playing, as well as the other guys.

Also about the rig, I think she uses whatever the venue or area can supply. The last two times she was using a GK 800rb head and an older SWR 4x10, the other was her GK MB150 which I think she took with her on tour. I've seen here use lots of different uprights too, not too picky about gear it seems...the fretless she's playing was given to her by who ever makes it after her cool *** Doolin fretless AEB was busted up in transit a while back and it she's still playing it.

Yeah.... if you didnt see it you wold thnk it was two people... the rhythms of the music and the singing are so ..... diverse..

I saw her perform this past Saturday night down here in South Florida. (I'm not an aficionado of modern jazz but like some of it).

She's exceptionally talented as a bassist and a vocalist and watching her sing and play complex bass parts on upright or fretless electric at the same time so effortlessly was exhilarating and exhausting, as well as amazing, all at the same time. Wow! I can't even hum songs along with my playing without getting lost!

That being said, I didn't really care for some of her set list, too many pieces that sort of sound similar and run into each other and I found hard to follow. Last year I saw Corea, McLaughlin, McBride in Miami and had no trouble with the majority of their set, it was very enjoyable (especially the Corea originals which really were to my liking) even though I wasn't familiar with really any of it beforehand.

And too much talking to the audience-cutesy style, sometimes nonsenically. And lastly, I find excessive audience engagement (sing-a-longs) of unfamiliar tunes to be irritating.

However, I think with some maturity she'll be unforgettable and a major force in music. She's amazing and very likable.

Wish she'd done that Stevie Wonder cover.....

Ed (yes, sounding like an old crank!)

PS I saw an SWR Blonde combo sitting on some sort of 410 I couldn't read..

I just bought her album. After listening to it the whole way through I have decided that se should replace Tal. Not only does she play waaaay better than Tal, she sings and is pretty hot too. So musically entertaining and intelligent. All imo of course.

Dude, why, because they're both female? its like a non sequitar. Espy's talents are much different than Tal's, regardless of gender.

Comparing and contrasting artists is what folks that have no clue to the magic do. Honor mother music, get to the magic.

Each is a unique soul.

Ed, man you have to loosen up. Part of getting old gracefully I'm coming to find out!

BTW, I would KILL to be Lord of her thighs. Espy that is. Kill, I tell ya. Please tell me she's gay so I can stop coveting. Please Lord....

BTW, in all seriousness, her main attributes to my mind's eye, her electric smile and the aura she projects. To my off the chart harmonic Hz, its palpable. That is what will carry her long run, chops are just an enabler.

To wit, that soul's got more than mere chops children.
