Esperanza Spalding Pickup Position?

Might be just an aesthetic feature.
It is interesting that the bass pickup position seems to be difficult to define. The sound is great and I am planning a fretless built and thought I put the humbucker in that position to get this tone.

Been (idly) curious about that placement of the output jack. IIRC, Stonefield does that, maybe some Ritters..? Would think a straight plug would protrude and get in the way while playing. Hey, what do I know? Anybody here have a bass like that, have a comment?

So, how does the pickup center being about 4.33" from the bridge (G string saddle) compare to MM, P, etc.?
Based on a chart I found, it's right in the P territory.

If it's really P position that's interesting because I don't like a P Bass Fretless without a bridge singlecoil pu, it lacks definition and in my opinion has trouble cutting through the mix.
But none of this with Esperanza, clear cuts through the mix and has a defined sound.

It is my opinion that the pickup is slightly closer to the neck than that of a stingray.
I cropped two photos, one of ES and one of Tony Levin with his SR5, to get to a point where both bass bodies look pretty much the same size and at a similar angle (I didn’t spend a lot of time on it...). ES’s pickup looks to be closer to the neck....maybe by 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch...

Added Pino and his P-bass. ES’s Pickup looks like somewhere in between the SR and P positions.

Yes. They use blades for their non-exposed pole pickups Invalid Link Removed
The pickup on Ms. Spaulding’s bass looks closer to the neck than a Stingray. I always love that she does not employ a thin, bridge pickup tone. I like the Jaco sort of tone, but not all of the time.

Spalding’s bass has a pickup maybe .5” closer to the neck.
Here's the best I could do overlaying a P and the ES South Paw. Darn near the P position.
