essential bass pedals for post metal

And you have a Ric 4003 that you're going to run through a TECH 21 SansAmp 3 channel into an Apollo duo to record post metal songs similar to Russian Circles.

Say you know a lot about guitar pedals and nothing about bass pedals.

What are the essentials for this style???

There are no "essentials", just a bunch of choices. Distortion/drive or fuzz is handy, but using effects is a personal preference thing, not an essential part of a bass rig.

What he said. I'd use a Rat, a Muff, and an OCD of some sort.

I'd say that a moderate distortion with a mids control goes a longer way, for bass, than the usual dense and saturated fuzz the guitar tends to use.

Above all else you need sounds that mix well with the guitar so you can't tell who's doing what, as well as sounds that cut through so you stand out. Beyond that whatever fits the soundscape you are going for and works with your fellow instruments.
