As the quality of the instruments have varied you're more prone to get a more accurate review from folks still very much hyped or otherwise if you post rather than go back and resurrect old threads.

The only way you can go wrong with an SX P is if they send you a bad one and you don't return it. Just think: almost all of them are fine QC-wise. If it's flawed, you get a week or something like that to send it back - on their dime!

I modded it, but I mod everything that sits in a stand long enough for me to grab a screwdriver....
It's my most played axe now, more than my pair of Warmoth cu$tom spec'ed axes. It's just fun to play. I hear more complaints from the 5 string owners than from the 4 stringers. Have fun!

I might have missed it, but is that a replacement neck? I ask because you put the Hipshots on and I don't see the holes left by the old tuners.

That is an SX neck I bought used from TB'er Azoore. I drilled, doweled, clear nail polished, and sanded the holes left by the old tuner screws. If you look close you can see the dowels. Also, if you look close, the plates of the Ultralites didn't fully cover the post hole.

IF you open an SX thread and post something, you must have some interest. Go ahead and buy that SX you secretly admire.

I have been playing for well over 30 years ( look out old fart rant) I have lots of basses mostly USA vintage stuff. I also have a SX '75J that I use in my shop (I also build basses) It amazes me what you get for your $ with a SX. I have had 4 or so over the years. Fit and finish are excellent on these basses, the wood they use maple for the necks ash or alder for the bodies is on par with MIM Fender. Most of us agree that the hardware is not up to MIM Fender but certainly very usable. fret work is a little rough but fine for the price range. Set up ? Any bass I have ever bought needs to be set up out of the box, doesn't matter if I spent 150 or 5K . Man when I think about the Kingstons and Tiescos that were starter basses when I was a kid young cats are so lucky to have such a great piece of affordable gear available. Buy the SX you won't be sorry What are the Ps going for ? something like $109 ? That will buy you a very good sounding good looking good playing well made bass, I say go for it ! my SX 75J

I've had a SX short scale Jazz for about 3 months and have been impressed with the overall quality and playability. However yesterday I replaced the roundwounds with flatwounds and was a little upset how bad the frets were chewed up. In the 3 months I probably average one hour a day practicing. We jam about once a week for 3 to 4 hours and have played four 4 hour gigs. Still plays good and the flats kick ass. Kind of wondering what the fret material is and if this is normal. A fret job will cost considerably more that the bass.
I posted this previously, so I guess I sound a little like a broken record. I used to go to Rondo's and jsut sit and play all their basses. If you've been there, you know this isnt a ton of basses, but perhaps 20 or so?
Anyway, most of the SX basses were at elast on par with their squire counterparts they mimicked. There were CERTAINLY clunkers, and they were really lousy. However, it was less model specific than it was just occassional terrible QC and setup.
Anyhow, for the price they are VERY hard to beat, so long as you dont get a lousy one. You'll know it, cause it'll be a sack of crap. Send it back.
I read that lots of guys really dig the p/u's now. Perhaps they changed? When the store was there I thought they were OK, nothing special, and that a large % of them were very microphonic. Tap them and it was LOUD. tap the wood on the bass and it was LOUD. I repotted mine and it cured it in 20 minutes.

I've had great luck with my SX's. Couldn't ask for more out of any bass really. It's proved it self to be an exeptional "workhorse" bass. Yeah, mine has a couple of mods, but nothing radical. It's served me extreemly well for the 4 years that I've owned it, and countless shows, including last night, that I've played it on.
Love 'em.

Just bought the basic P for $99 in vintage white. I was very hesitant but the guys in the bass forum over at TDPRI (telecaster discussion) convinced me it would be worth it. I am glad I listened because I love it. There are some areas on the back of the neck where you can tell a worker with dirty hands touched the raw wood before applying the poly coat as there are some tiny black smudges in hard to find places. Other than that mine is flawless and the pickups sound pretty good!

Bought a jazz bass from a TB member that had installed Lace pickups
I have 2 70's Jazz basses
The SX is a little bit heavy but is the better of the 3 basses as there is no ski jump in the neck and the tone is great
Have no experience with unit to unit QC, but if you get a good one (like most of us have), it is the BEST low priced bass available IMO
