Eternals

I saw it. Sloppy mess. Insufficient character development and too many of them, making each one forgettable and uninteresting. The scale of the story being told was way too big to be in one movie. Not the worst MCU movie but not far off. If shiny things and ‘splosions are enough for you to enjoy a movie, you’ll probably like it.

I kinda sorta wanted to see it, but it took me several hours and repeat viewings of the previous Marvel movies to learn and understand those characters. I don't really feel up for learning a new batch of characters.
If I get in the mood for some super hero action, I'll just rewatch ones with the guys and gals I already know all about.

Yeah, it is a fairly complex movie, one that would require multiple viewings to really understand. 2001 A Space Odyssey was no different in that respect?

New characters to learn about? That's pretty much how most new, unfamiliar movies are like, isn't it?

Yes, but watching a Marvel movie is a bit more involved character wise than a comedy or some other types of movies for me.
I suppose someone can sit down and watch Eternals and then walk away, but I tend to get involved in the movies I watch in this genre. I've watched the other Marvel movies 3-4 times each or more because 1) I like them and 2) I want to really understand and know the different heroes, how they relate to the other heroes, the back story, yadda yadda.
The other night when I watched Settlers, once was enough. It gave me all the info I needed to know for the characters in the movie. Same with a movies like Footloose, White Water Summer, or The Revenant.

This movie tried to do what The Avengers did with a cast of diverse and interesting characters, but the Avengers had a dozen movies over two decades to establish them. This movie tried to do the same thing by stuffing exposition and flashbacks into two and a half hours and they failed miserably.

See, that's just something I can't seem to put brain cells towards as it has zero impact on my life. I'll watch the movies as individual entertainment segments while my wife is making comments about the connections and what this and that means in the MCU.

Aha, but see? It is impacting your life. Here you are posting about it on the internet. :D
As Geddy once said, if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Haven't see it yet, waiting for it to show up on Disney+. It came out when I was still concerned about movie theaters. The only movie I've seen in a theater since this whole mess started is Antlers, and that was a first showing of the day for a movie I was sure almost no one was going to see anyway. In that, I was mostly correct. There were maybe six to ten people in the entire theater, including me.

I don’t understand watching a work of fiction and not caring about the characters. It doesn’t impact your life a lot, but it does a little. The tv and movies we watch throughout our lives effect our personalities to some degree. It has to. Otherwise theaters would show filmed fireworks.

I dunno, I have seen a bunch of these comic book movies on airplane flights. I don't listen to the sound, I just read my book and every so often I look up (it's hard not to, when there's a screen every two or three rows with all kinds of explosions going off. I figure any movie where I can follow the plot without the sound probably isn't worth much of my time or effort.

Just a bunch of special effects.

Sorry.

I’d be very interesting in hearing your summaries for some of these plots you followed.

Evil genius (or group of evil genii) threatens the world.

Superhero, or group of superheroes (and superheroines) discovers the evil plot.

[Lots of explosions, people jumping 100 feet in the air, spinning round, etc.]

Superhero, or group of superheroes (and superheroines) save the world.

Normal life resumes, at least till the next movie.

Next!

I didn't think I'd seen the movie in question but, reading your account above, it seems I have. Thanks for saving me some time!

If I never see another MCU movie again, I'll be quite fine. A bunch of lazy screen writing covered up by CGI flash. There is so much great scifi begging to be made into a movie. Of course, the studios would have to take a chance that the public is willing to think while they watch a movie.....

....oh, never mind.

Jupiter Ascending was the last original(ish) sci fi movie I can think of. Not a remake or a sequel. I liked it a lot, but it was pretty universally disliked. But you’re right. There’s so much great sci fi that could be great as movies. Maybe in the next few years people will start to care about it.
