Double Bass EUB Strings Thread

So on an nxt4 how did things change when you went from ns traditionals to obligatos? Tone, sustain, tension, spiritual well being?
The tone is deeper with a big thump. They are low tension and easy on the fingers. They stretch a lot when stringing them, I was really worried about them breaking so tuned them low and raised them slowly a half step a day, holding my breath. On the third day I had a gig and loved them.

Band rehearsal w Omni strung w custom set of EB Group flats. They were great. They share some sonic character with the Cobalt flats, they have a wireyness in the treble response that is un-flat like. Good for my purposes.

Fwiw, the cobalt flats are working great on the Bongo.

May want to try them out, specifically what EB strings are you using?

EB Group Flat
40, 55, 70, 90, 110

These purchased as singles from fretnation.com

These are a descending tension set from the 40 down to the 110. Wanted to get away from the giant B string, since this setup is primarily for arco use, its working great and seems to tolerate the lower tension. The 40 is starting more stridently than the rest, hoping it will calm down some.

They are not the absolute smoothest flat, through i havent had alot of exp w flats for bass guitar. I put these between the ghs brite flats and ghs precision flats in regard to smoothness. I have the p flats on my cello, theyre great there, but they didnt have quite the gauges I wanted for the omni, so I tried the cobalts, then now the Groups. The tuner wraps are also slim and flexible, so they work great with the shaller pegs on the omni.

Hi All,

Happy to find this thread; yesterday my Palatino VE-500 fell over and broke one string with damage to two others. I’ve had this instrument about a year and a half and don’t know it’s history prior to my ownership, but I suspect the strings were probably original.

I have a 4/4 Hollowbody home built Cello that works great with D’Addario Prelude strings on it and was thinking that they would be a good place to start. Can anyone here confirm if they will fit?

My Palatino has 41” scale and about 6.5” of string below the bridge and about 7” above the nut, so in total I would need the G string to be 56” or longer. I use a bow for about 10-15% of the songs I play on it.

I can confirm any 3/4 DB string will work on a Palatino.

Im working toward audio or video post, but for now, for my purposes, im rather happy with the performance of these Group flats on my Omni 5. These are not in any way emulating of a double bass tone. They are somehow still wiry and growly, and carry this pretty well to arco tone. Its funny, but i really like how they growl fingerstyle as well, and they have a sort of DB sound, but from the other side? Hard to describe. It might be he gauges i picked, but these do have a slinkyness and high flexibility.

These are staying on the bass for the foreseeable future.

Update: I got the strings this afternoon from my local music store, they aren’t open for browsing but they do allow curb side pickup for website orders. So I strung them up and they came to tune quickly and play well. A bit sharper than the strings they replace, but that’s to be expected with any new set of strings. They definitely bow better and have a good feel to them. At $125Cdn I think they were a good value as well.

Just tried something new on my Eminence EUB - Pirastro Perpetuals ADG, with a Spiro Weich. I have a full set of Perpetuals on my DB and like the feel of them alot. Picked up the ADG used to see how they'd work and I really like them! Very smooth, soft feel, bow well, sounds great amplified. Not inexpensive strings but a good option to consider. I had used a full set of Spiro Weichs on the Eminence before and found the d and especially the g too twangy, but the Perpetuals are much better and fuller sounding. Of course not able to try them in a band setting (hopefully soon!).
