Double Bass EUB Strings Thread

EB Group Flat
40, 55, 70, 90, 110

These purchased as singles from fretnation.com

These are a descending tension set from the 40 down to the 110. Wanted to get away from the giant B string, since this setup is primarily for arco use, its working great and seems to tolerate the lower tension. The 40 is starting more stridently than the rest, hoping it will calm down some.

They are not the absolute smoothest flat, through i havent had alot of exp w flats for bass guitar. I put these between the ghs brite flats and ghs precision flats in regard to smoothness. I have the p flats on my cello, theyre great there, but they didnt have quite the gauges I wanted for the omni, so I tried the cobalts, then now the Groups. The tuner wraps are also slim and flexible, so they work great with the shaller pegs on the omni.

I've had EB flats on my Omni CR4 for over a month and still like them for pizz and arco. sizes- .09, .075, .055, .045.

I'm wondering about fitting Weed Wacker premium strings onto my Warwick Triumph Lite. The scale length is 1040mm so these strings should be fine to trim to length. But, they seem to require knotting at the tailpiece end and I am not sure how well that would work with the tailpiece on this instrument (picture below).

Has anyone tried strings such as these on a similar instrument? I'd be interested to know what you found. Any suggestions for secure fixing would also be welcome.

Never tried it (don’t have either instrument or strings), but I doubt that the thick Wackers will fit the slots.
A knot might not fit either and might slip. Heating the knot and/or melting the end to make it bigger to a lid slipping through the knot might be a solution for that part.
Check string diameters and slot width first.

Good points, thanks.
According to Warwick's customer support "...strings up to a .135 gauge will not be a problem at all..." for the tuner capstans and nut. I measured the slots in the tailpiece and they are around 4.2mm/0.165", so the strings should all go on given the thickest in the premium set is 0.130". But, whether the knots would hold at the tailpiece is another question.
Strings often come with foam washers and I've also seen pictures of washers that look rubber, e.g. https://www.thomann.de/pics/bdb/335719/8274218_800.jpg.
Anyone know where I can get hold of something like that?

For my NS WAV4 I changed the NS Traditionals to Corelli 370M's. Easier to start on the bow, lower tension and sustain for days... I like them!

On my NS CR5M I just made the switch from a full spirocore set to Bel Cantos on the EADG keeping my original spiro B. I and pretty happy with this, arco is dreamy!

On my NS NXTa-5 fretted cello I am using the D'Addario NS Electric 5-string cello F,C&G and Helicore heavy tension for the D & A which I tune to C & F so my tuning is in 5ths from the G string going down and in 4ths from the G string going up.

Sure. It came about because of the phrasing i wanted to use for soloing was more bass centric than cello. It just gives you a different flow. When i first got it i was fine as i have had a normal acoustic cello for a while. But as ive been playing the ns cello i started hitting on sounds along the line of icm style flute bits so i wanted to expand on the and that tuning also hits on sitar esque tunings..

Here is a very quick and dirty idea runthough.. I was testing running a tambura through my looper and playing over it.. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Thats nice for quick and dirty, i will subscribe.

I got my cello as an expansion of the eub, trying my best to keep it celli, as I have an omni for bassy tuning. I also dig the high guitar E, it really screams.

I know this is an old post, but here goes: I have an NS WAV 5 strung up with strings that have black silk at both ends with a brass-looking ball end; these don't look like the Contemporary or Traditional NS strings and they are installed at the EUB slots, not the extended DB slots. Any guesses?

I believe my WAV 4 was also strung with those. Somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to remember reading somewhere they are Chinese no-name strings similar to the contemporary, but this might also be a figment of my imagination.

My Knutson Messenger has been wearing Flexocre 92 and Original mix for about 7 yrs. Very clear yet dark arco and pizz. (Jargars are also really good on it) Before that had spiros for many years. These were great for road and studio for last 20 yrs.

My Knutson Messenger sports D’Addario Orchestrals. They are right at the sweet spot for me to do arch and pizz without a lot of sustain. I also get a good muaww in the lower registers of the the E and A when playing pizz. My AI Coda combo really helps shape the sound too.

Pretty sure that they're Spiros on my Clevinger keyhole basses. They sound good and I use some foam to deaden them but I'm not real keen on going down the string rabbit hole with these instruments. (*mutters to self*, "I know I have some Jargar sets around here somewhere...")
