Double Bass Eudoxa or Flat-Chromesteel E with Evah Pirazzi?

I use Evah Pirazzi set on my bass, and I really love the sound and feel of this strings.. But my bass a little bit weak at the bottom, I like to blend with another E string to improve the volume and sustain at the E. I know that's stupid but I like select from the Pirastro line over other brand, if possible. What do think about Eudoxa or Flat-Chromesteel E?

I don't think either of the two will improve the situation for you, as the EP is already a loud and good sustaining string. You might try a Eudoxa "Stark" E. An EP stark would be a good bet, but I don't think they make them. There's nothing stupid about wanting to stay with the brand. A Eudoxa (or Oliv) will match the sound and feel of the EPs better than anything I can think of from another manufacturer.

Pirastro's E strings are generally chosen for arco concentrations. The only pirastro E string I tried that doesn't lay down dead for pizz is the permanent.

The Evah E string on the full set is pretty good for a Pirastro E. There isn't much anywhere that will duplicate that sound. Have you tried a Spirocore Mittel E or Stark E on that bass?

The Eudoxa E is the most similar Pirastro E I tried.
It's quite expensive though....

Did you try the Obligato E in the past?

The FlatChrome E is a disaster, IMHO.
I talked to Adrian Mueller about it, and he agreed about this, but changing the design of an existing string is not an easy choice, as some people may like the existing one.

I used Spirocore long time ago, they are very good strings, not really like the feel as a set, but for E string likely works.

I don't think that the Eudoxa E will give you more power than the EP. I'd also advise going with a steel E like Spirocore.

Pirastro Flat-Chromesteel and Jazzer are steel strings. I used Obligatos before EP. I much prefer EP. over Obligatos as a set, but the E string was pretty strong as I remember. I have the used Obli set, maybe I try the E with, maybe it worth. As far as I know, Patitucci blend the EP. with Olive and Eudoxa.

Remembering that Patitucci has a great sounding bass(and hands) as well... I still think what ever strings you use on the A D G, having a Spirocore E will give you the most sound on the bottom.

Yes I'm pretty sure Patitucci and his bass sounds good with almost any strings, but, I think he has good reason to blend the EP. with Olive and Eudoxa. I'm just curious!
Patitucci is just an example here, this is a threat about strings.
For another thing, I love his playing.

I've just ordered a set of Evah's for my Paul Bryant Panormo, I'v egot some Eudoxa's on it at the moment which cost me £400! but they keep slipping out of tune (very quickly) and this makes me nervous.

So I'm hoping for a real improvement, I've ordered the low tension 'soft' strings which should emulate the gut Eudoxa's.

Fingers crossed!

A real improvement over Eudoxas? Think man! They don't charge that kind of scratch for nothing. Of course they go out of tune, but that's the rub with gut. You need to tune before and after every practice session, and show up really early to gigs and rehearsals to have time to properly tune before "tuning". How much time have you spent with your Eudoxas? I don't use them anymore for financial reasons (and also because they are not ideal for orchestral audition solos) but after playing them for many years, I find any other string a pale comprimise. Play them in a bit longer before you switch!

Robobass,

Thanks for your view.

I've had the Eudoxas on for 12 months or so now and I'm well prepared for tuning etc. I've been playing orchestrally since I was 13; I'm nearly 40 now! (eek)

It may be that the strings have lost thier tuning holding properties as I took them off to have some new machine heads fitted? Who knows? Since this rework done I've had a terrible time with them holding their frequency, they seem to be very very sensitive to temperature changes,

What are your thoughts on the refitting gut strings?

No chance to find a good E string to blend with EP from the Pirastro product line?

The Evah E string on the full set is pretty good for a Pirastro E.

As I said if you want to bow it at least occasionally and don't want a Thomastic E string or an Evah E the only thing left in their line that has any pizz strength without sacrificing arco is the Permanent E.

Try the Eudoxa if you have a bunch of cash you can burn if you don't like it, it is certainly better than Flat chrome steel or really anything else but the Evah and the Permanent.

I like the Flexocor Stark E for arco but it will kill you pizz.

The Jazzer and Pizzicatto wouldn't blend well at all with the Evah and arco would be a chore in comparison.
