EV LF215 and other delights

Hey guys. Had some questions that I think are hopeless anywhere aside from here.

Years ago, a bandmate had a Mesa Road Ready 215 that I lusted over. The tone out of that thing paired with an SVT was jaw dropping.
I knew those Mesas were paired with 15" EV speakers. Since those Diesels and Road Ready cabs are near impossible to find these days, I went looking for something similar.

That's when I stumbled on these behemoths. I ended up trading some other gear for a full system, including the horns/crossovers and a pair of these LF215 cabs. To my understanding, they were TL606 style boxes and had the same drivers as the Mesa, so I started running them for bass.

These sound a little different than I expected. I find myself cranking up the bass regardless of what amp I plug into them. Is this a characteristic of all TL606 cabs?

Another thing I noticed is they are not a huge fan of pop/slap sounds, as the transient is weirdly super loud on these.

The overdrive tones on these are divine, though. Cranking a 200S or OB1-500 through this sounds otherworldly, even if you do have to turn the bass knob up pretty high.

Am I just misremembering the Mesa and it also lacks bottom end? Or is the Mesa not even close to being a TL606 sibling? If so, is it based on some other architecture? I've seen Sunn 215 and Yamaha J120L-215 cabs that looked awful similar.

Those drivers did not have great low end extension, that was actually one of the properties of these drivers that made them great bass drivers. Don't try to get heavy bass out of them using eq or tone controls and exploit the really nice low mid - mid character. That's what made them great.

I believe the cabs could be loaded with both EVM15L and EVM15B. Both have a rising response that emphasizes the mids and high mids. Neither can produce huge lows. I think what you describe is normal and you may be misremembering how the old Mesas sounded.
