EV Speaker question...which 15" to get?

OP, I haven't heard the EV driver you're asking about. I previously owned a Diesel 215 loaded with the 200 watt EVM's and liked the tone. I haven't heard the 400 watt versions of the EVM's but I've read on TB that they're darker than the 200 watters.

Thanks for the info. You wouldn't happen to know if the darker sound is a byproduct of the higher wattage rating or if it's just caused by a design difference, would you?

johnk_10, I've got some 3015's coming in and will be comparing them to my EVM15B which, despite it's limitations, has a tone I like. Can you compare the sound of K140's to EVM15's, either the L or B version.

the 15B that i had was nice and smooth, but i found it a bit too dark for me. i did have a 15L in a TL606 cab and that speaker sounded absolutely amazing. i couldn't have asked for a better sounding cab, and i regret selling now. i've been a JBL freak since '69 and was never that crazy about EV's (and always hated Altecs),and thought that EV's were too muffled, but the 15L in a TL606 changed my opinion of that. for me, it was smooth, punchy and very transparent (as opposed to cloudy/veiled). The JBL K140's just have everything i like in a 15" speaker. they are buttery smooth and very rich sounding speakers, with a clear and delicate high end.

The wattage rating seems to be a fixation. It shouldn't be, because of all the driver parameters that do define how a driver works wattage is one of the least significant. And it has no effect on tone.
As for the 3015 compared to the EVX, it goes lower, higher and louder and weighs half as much.

The only concern regarding wattage is my amp is 450 watts and the EV I'm using currently is 400 (which is why I'm considering the 600 watt model).

I've heard a couple of people say that the higher wattage EV's are darker sounding. So you're saying it's because of the design not because higher wattage speakers have any sort of tendency to be darker?

Moot. The EVX and 3015 take almost exactly the same amount of power before farting out in the bass, in both cases roughly 300 watts.

Wattage and tone are not directly related. Higher wattage drivers tend to have less high end, but that's because higher wattage drivers tend to be designed to deliver maximum low end, and you can't have it both ways. But where that's concerned the 3015 goes both lower and higher than the EVX.

Ahhhh. Good to know. Thanks so much for your help.

So do the EVX and 3015 fart out at the same power level because it's the nature of 15" speakers? If so, would an 18" speaker be a better choice?

Thanks again for your help. :)

;) i actually agree with that!
having had both 3015's and JBL K140's, i prefer the JBL's, and sold the 3015's. i really don't care what the modeling and spec sheets say if its sounds and responds the way that i like it. the 3015's (non-LF)just had a bark to them at 1.5-2K that made them sound to harsh/brittle and somewhat veiled to me. and for me no amount of hours eq'ing could solve it.

thanx johnk
sorry, typo. meant that I appreciate any 15" speaker opinions and suggestions
