EV Speaker question...which 15" to get?

I have a Diesel series Mesa Boogie 1x15 cab that has 400 watt EV speaker in it. I like it but my amp puts out more power than that and I don't want to fry it.

I'm thinking of going with a 600 watt Electro Voice EVX-155 speaker to put in a GK 1x15 cab I have. I believe the EVX-155 primarily a PA speaker, but will it sound good for bass (like the 400 watt EV DL15X does)?

Your help would be greatly appreciated. :)

The Diesel Series is basically the old TL-606 design. I believe that several people here have either used the Eminence Kappalite 3015 or the 3015LF (can't remeber which, but I think the non-LF version) with that cabinet and been very happy with the results. As a side benefit, you'll save a few pounds.

I replaced the EV 15L s in my diesel 2x15 with Eminence 3015s and it sounds smoother and goes deeper without bottoming out. Definitely handles more power. Still not super deep though. I think the TL606 box is a little small to get a lot of deep bass regardless of driver although the 3015LF would probably do better than the 3015. If you have more power available maybe get a bigger box with a 3015LF to run with your 2x10?

Thanks. Yes...as I mentioned above that I plan to put it in a GK cab. It's a lot bigger than the Mesa. :)

You forget that the JBL k140 and the EV drivers have more magic tone leprechauns per basket due to the age of the design allowing more leprechauns to build up.

;) i actually agree with that!
having had both 3015's and JBL K140's, i prefer the JBL's, and sold the 3015's. i really don't care what the modeling and spec sheets say if its sounds and responds the way that i like it. the 3015's (non-LF)just had a bark to them at 1.5-2K that made them sound to harsh/brittle and somewhat veiled to me. and for me no amount of hours eq'ing could solve it.

There's the rub when you don't have concerns about higher power applications. Sometimes it's the balance of the FR that sways one for use in full-range cabs. I kinda like some peaky bite myself, but like it way up in the range a small-format midrange driver can supply it more than I want it down where a lot of medium/high-rated MI woofers make it.

Every respect. You really might wanna just take Bill's word for it. Really.

Victor Wooten seems to really like the Hartke HyDrive speakers (not that I'm a big fan). People seem to respect his opinion when it comes to bass...I ended up being totally unhappy with them (the mid heavy, John Entwistle style I prefer made the cones bark like a rabid dog...they were also my first experience with neodymium speakers...not a big fan) and sold them at a loss.

I'd like to avoid that type of situation. :)

Yeah, I was kinda being facetious but the point is there. The FR for the 3015 is markedly different from the K140s and that's the only point at which the ear test is the only thing that works.

The response chart is one place where you can't say "superior" really, it's all in the tone leprechauns.

OP, I haven't heard the EV driver you're asking about. I previously owned a Diesel 215 loaded with the 200 watt EVM's and liked the tone. I haven't heard the 400 watt versions of the EVM's but I've read on TB that they're darker than the 200 watters.

johnk_10, I've got some 3015's coming in and will be comparing them to my EVM15B which, despite it's limitations, has a tone I like. Can you compare the sound of K140's to EVM15's, either the L or B version.
