Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part I

I have been using the Evah for a few months now and still am enjoying them. I was using the E and A only (with Oliv D and G) but the past two weeks have used the Evah E, A, and D with a variety of different G strings. I started with Oliv G. That combo works very well. The sound was very even and full. The Oliv D has always been hit or miss with me. I have never been happy with it yet could not find another D string that could compare. The Evah has taken care of that. I recently switched over to an Anima G and it actually works and sounds really great too. Larry Grenadier influenced me with his lone Anima G string (w/Helicores last time I saw him). I might even try the Evah G againand leave it one for a while longer this time. I don't hink I gave it enought of a chance the first time around. I have found that these strings sound better (as most do) after about 2 weeks. BTW-no durability issues at all. They are still going strong! I hope you guys that are wanting them can get them soon. Keep us posted on what you think when you do get them.

got the evah g and d strings yesterday. i like the d string alot. bows very well and feels and sounds great with the fingers. not as happy with the g string. does not bow very well for me and feels a bit thin. i put my olive g string back on tonight. the evah d and the olive g match very well in terms of tension, flexibility and size. much better match than the olive d string imo. it is a little bigger than the olive g, but not as thick and thumpy as the olive d, and it stays in tune. we'll see how the e and a strings do when they arrive........

Actually, they do suck. I love them too (the strings, not the company), I've played Olivs and Oblis, and they're nice. But if they advertise a string for months, list them in the major retailers' websites (with pricing info), and somehow get those otherwise reputable retailers to say that they will be available "by the end of the week" for months on end.... sorry, that SUCKS in my book. I just sent an Email to Pirastro basically saying the same. If I ran my personal affairs that way, I'd be an unemployed bassist "by the end of the week".

Thank god I'm not waiting for a kidney from Pirastro...I'd be dead meat by now. Long live Thomastik.

For what it's worth, I received today the set of EP's I ordered from an european outlet, so it would seem that Pirastro is beginning to ship.

As has been said before, they're quite dark strings; the balance of fundamental to overtones is similar to Olivs, but there is also a kind of dryness to them that reminds me of Dominants. The tension feels like red Spiros to me.

I just played my first gig with them (on the hybrid Cleveland), and they performed very well. They don't have a complex sound like Olivs, or plain guts, but that simple and robust sound really cut through in an acoustic context. Oh, and arco is fantastic.

So far, so good.

Pirastro got back to me. Said they were trying really hard to fill all their orders. I have to assume they meant to say "European orders". They also said they "hope that I get my strings soon".

I've already got my strings. They're on the bass as I speak. Not perfect, but hey... they were paid for in full, about five years ago! And I can order new ones any day of the week ;)

Pirastro's technical manager, Adrian Mueller, told me they plan to make solo-tunings in 8 to 10 months.

Meanwhile, they're loaded with orders, and hope you guys are not too upset by the delays.

I have read most of the posts in this thread, and it's looking like these strings might be a good match for D&G Guts.

Currently I've got D&G guts which I got from Nick Lloyd (efranos, I think), and Spiro Mittel E&A on my ply Cleveland.

First, is anybody using a combo of guts and Evahs? I know some people are using Olivs and Evahs.

Also has anybody put these on a Cleveland? Mine is about a year old now.

Lastly I am concerned about volume. I play jazz primarily, and haven't played much with an amp in close to a year. So acoustic volume is very important. A volume comparison to other strings would be perfect.

the E and A would probably match well with plain gut for pizz. and really i don't think any steel matches well with plain gut for arco. arco on plain gut just has that distinctive tone that steel won't do.

it's been a while since i've had plain gut on my bass though.

Same here. Cleveland with Gamut Heavy Gut D/G, Spiro Mittel E/A.

Want to try these as well.

Can't get them yet though....

i've had the evah g, d, and a on for a full day now, and did a lot of practicing on them yesterday. got the extended E today, but havent played on it much yet.

my initial reaction. these are GREAT strings right out of the package. i was impressed by how mellow they were immediately. quick background. i used to use flexocore 92's with a permanent E when i was pursuing an orchestral career. switched to obligatos last year when my primary focus became jazz. i loved obligatos, but hated the roll on the A and particularly extended E.

compared to obligatos, these are a tighter string. they fall between the flexs and the obligato, but the tension is just about perfect for me. this makes them faster than obligatos...they respond quicker under the bow. they also dont have the sponginess that i sometimes get with obigatos when walking basslines. the tone of the whole evah set is fantastic...dark, warm pizz tone, and a dark arco tone that actually projects.

for me, the evah's are going to be a better crossover string than obligatos. the feel under my hands is more like a steel string, but the sound is gut with a little more sustain. i highly recommend trying them out, whatever your focus is. good luck finding them...it looks like lemur should have full sets in very soon.
