Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part I

As of Friday they were still not in regular dealer stock. I dunno, when a company decides they are out of Beta testing and are sending out promotional sets to start a buzz they should really be ready to collect money.

Pretty soon they'll end up killing whatever good will they are generating on these guys. If they start breaking regularly they are dead meat.

Got me scratching my head.

I've been making calls like that every other week since this thread began in mid April. That is the kind of response I get each time.

I was at Mike Shank's yesterday for some bridge adjustment. (Every time I visit him I'm more and more impressed with the quality of his work and his intuitive ability to translate what I describe as sound into physical adjustments. Amazing man.)

Make has 10 or so sets of EPs in his shop. Apparently, after reading Talkbass, he bought up everything he could. Some sets have long E's.

His #'s are 800-613-2277 or 717-361-0511. Expect to leave a message and he or Linda will get back to you in a day or so. :eyebrow:

I'd think they would be nice with good plain guts. Big dark fundamental, nice focus. The tension is more apparent to me in the G string than in the others, so I doubt that it would be a big adjustment.

More like Oliv for sure. I totally agree with the tension statement as well. The G is still my least favorite of the EP's. Not a bad string but very tense on my bass. The Oliv in it's place has fixed that problem. I had 4 gigs in the last 4 days and my hand is not feeling the tension like it was in prior weeks.

Well the EP's have been on my bass for 4 months...

Still sound very good,projection is still strong and arco is wonderful...

No signs of breakage anywhere,the set has been off the bass
4 times now.Not the norm for me but I had a bridge problem & installed a Full Circle.
This would not be possible with the Obligato's,which I was changing every 5-6 months,so cool,less money to spend.

It's long story,but after a hang with Ron Carter and Chuck Traeger,neither really like the string and Ron said my bass was unplayable,I lowered my action a little.

The bass seemed to like this,the strings gained some more
overtones,it's working so,once again cool.

after using Obli's since there release,I think I have a new string...
this thread is very cool,thanks to all for sharing the info,

So I received my set of Evah's yesterday!

For those keeping score, I emailed Pirastro last Fri. about getting a trial set. I thought it was a huge long shot but they (Adrian Mueller, Technical Director) emailed me back saying that they would send me a set free of charge. It was only two days after I got the confirmation email that they arrived, postmarked from Germany, that's fast! So far the best customer service I've ever dealt with.

Anyway, I put them on the Cleveland and I immediately noticed that they're tension matched the guts much better. I'll post more once I've played them in

Got my 'D' string in the mail today from Mike Shank and threw it on the bass. I've got EP 'G' and 'D', Spiro Mittel 'E' and 'A'.

Wow.

I've never heard my bass this LOUD before, first of all. It's a darker, rounder sound, but the punch is very much there. Half position, thumb position and everything in between is full and rich--and present. Arco is easy and smooth and pizz is full and nice (although that 'G' string was still a little stiff on a gig last night). I've read a few posts about the EP 'A' string being "all that", but for those who've been wondering, I've got a GREAT match here. The upper strings are loud, fat, and present while the Spiros give my bottom some clarity and sharpness. Having that EP 'D' string really evens things out, feel-wise, with the upper 2 strings, and sonically these strings are a great match across the board. Unlike a full Spiro set, which seems to really accentuate those higher frequencies on higher strings (i.e. "twang"), my sound is pretty flat and even across the board now.

Seeing as how these strings are pretty elusive right now, I think I'm quite fine with this mix.

i just emailed them. i'm interested in the combo you're using. I love my E and A sound from the Spiros, but am really unsatisfied and annoyed with my G and D sound.

hopefully this will cure it :cool:

I have to second your assessment. I've bought all of my basses from Mike Shank (8 so far and 3 of those in the last 18 months) and he is the only guy I'll let touch them. And since I live 4 hours from him, it is a real haul to get there. But he REALLY knows his stuff so it is worth it.

I finally got a set of these guys in today. Nice looking strings as always with Pirastro. It's gonna be a bit before I try them out but I'll do it and post as per usual.

Gages are as follows:

E = .110
A = .089
D = .070
G = .059

Similar to Obligatos in girth but quite a bit stiffer than the usual supple things you get from Pirastro. Not stiff like Dominants but headed that way.

Slightly bigger in diameter on the G and D vs. Spiro Mittels.

I'm glad you finally got some Phil.

My impressions so far are, that they sound a little darker than spiro mittel E&A (the only ones I have on), and have a little less tension. They haven't settled yet though. Much, Much better with the bow than spiros however.

It's funny that recently I've been digging the way my bass sounds and not really into changing anything right now. When I started trying to dig up these strings months ago I was ready to try them out, now I'm not all that much in a hurry anymore.

Go figure.

C'mon Uncle Toad man...throw 'em on. At least the E and A. After all this talk I've been really looking forward to an Uncle Toad String Report on these things.

You know they will be calling out to you in your dreams. You might wake up with a New Standard in your lap and a handful of steel in each hand.

Yea well, you know me to well.

I've been catching glimpses of the package on the desk out of the corner of my eye all day. That little green face--I swear it moves.

It's pathetic. I'm hopeless.

Regardless I've got gigs every day this week and I borrowed some speakers from Tom Bowlus so I'm committed to reviewing them over the next several gigs. Can't change strings just yet.

I need stringerette gum. I can't do it without a crutch...

We'll see how long I hold out.
