So, I was fairly unhappy with the strings tonight, but the band couldn't shut up about how great the bass sounded. "Especially the bottom, it's huge and full!" Kept going on about it.

I guess I'm going to have to deal.

well, i'm loving these strings. they seem to have the perfect balance of tension, so they're not floppy; and softness, so they don't kill you to play them. what i'm finding is they sound best, for me, when don't dig in too hard, so gigs are less fatiguing ... no prob with the amplifed sound in a number of contexts, although i'm still tweaking that some. and the acoustic sound is so sweet. the only concern is a general lack of energy on upper register notes past thumb pos ... but i don't spend alot of time there, for what we do.

i'm sure all the comments from everyone here are valid for what folks are looking for in sound, feel, etc for their particular bass, but for my little (little?) upton hybrid, they rock.

I was heading down to the shop to get the calipers when I remembered that Toad measured these babies and reported the gauge back on page 5 (or whatever) of this thread. Seek and ye shall find.

I've got yet another week on these strings. I am really digging the detail I hear in the sound -- I don't know how to describe it, but my bass has never voiced the E string so well as with this particular E string.

On the other hand.... there's something non-distinct about them. Like playing with a rubber on, or something like that. They are attenuated in a way that steel strings just aren't.

YMMV, as always. Just reporting my thoughts.

Gages are as follows:

E = .110
A = .089
D = .070
G = .059

Similar to Obligatos in girth but quite a bit stiffer than the usual supple things you get from Pirastro. Not stiff like Dominants but headed that way.

Slightly bigger in diameter on the G and D vs. Spiro Mittels.

This was awhile ago. No tension measure is available. Similar to Spiro Mittel.

I think the actual tension of these is deceiving. Because they feel so soft under the fingers being fatter in diameter they become easier to press down. I don't think you can compare this type of construction to some type of Steel/ropecore like Spiros. The strings respond differently when plucked. A wider type of oscillation if I can use that comparison. Having the Nut real low with the string almost touching the Fingerboard might help I think.

I have these on my English Gilkes and it's the best overall string I have had on that Bass in the 3 1/2 years I've owned it. I have in the past mainly used Flexocor regular and Starks but have also used Obligatos, Original Flatchrome, Flexocor/Permanent combo and the old Velvet 180 formula.

The EPs work best on this Bass as it seems to sound better with lighter tensioned strings.

For a test I took off the EP G-string and put it on my Martini to see if it would improve that Bass any. After a few minutes I took it off and put it back on the Gilkes. It was too bright and raspy on the Martini for my taste. The Martini sounds best to me with Flexocor Starks. On that Bass I have used and tried Flexocor/Permanent combo, all Permanents, reg. Flexocor, Stark Flex, Original Flex, Orig. Flexocor, Obligatos and a complete set of Olivs.

The Martini has a deep floor spreading type sound while the Gilkes, no matter what strings are on it has a more midrange in your chest type sound with an airy boom to the sound. The EPs seem to work well on the Gilkes but I couldn't enjoy what it did with the Martini.

With that said, it is not always easy to find your string match no matter what kind of Bass you have. I remember asking about strings when I first came up here on TB and was told about the Flexocor and Original Flex being the deepest darkest bowing strings. I was looking to improve the sound of my Gilkes then. I discovered the Starks by accident when I bough the Dodd with an old pre-1990 set of them on it. Now it's the EPs that works best on that Bass.

In my rack are 3 great Basses all with different strings on them because thats what makes each Bass sound best.

Thank you uncletoad and 16fuss for those digits,exactly what i need to consider these Evah's.
Agree with T-ball ,it would be nice to have those tension numbers converted.
I find that chart Jordan knight and jake devillars have on Gauge and tension extremely helpful when considering strings.
Ken,with all due respect to your findings i too LOVE the Flexes.GD(Flex 92-awesome)A(Orig Flex or Orig Flat-chrome-Fattest)E is the quest i am after.
For the E ,i tried the starks,as a matter of fact i even tried the stark A;unfortunately i took it off.It had a metallic edge i didn't care for.But i would say they were close.
I guess i am looking for the most natural,organic,sound production without sacraficing the BOOM and ZOOM factor.
So i may try these Evah's.The diameter Of both the A and E is .001 thicker than Orig.Flex and Orig.Flat-chrome.who knows it might just be right.
And ultimatly ,like buying a pair of pants,it's important to TRY it on for ultimate Fit.

Those numbers are slightly lower than Dominants and significantly lower than Spiro Mittels. Just goes to show that tension and stiffness are two different things.
