Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

My new (to me) 100+ year old German bass has had a new set of Animas on since Monday. The pizz is fabulous, but under the bow sounds like a castrated angry cat screaming, miked through a Leslie speaker. Yep, that IS how bad it is. Animas bowed pretty well on my other bass, so I can't figger it out. If they don't settle down in the next few weeks, I'll try the EP weichs. Promise.

With a Garbo, gut mix on the other bass, I really want to make this bass work for arco and I know it can.

Just got my first taste of these strings today. A student at the Aebersold camps had them on his bass, and i got to play it for a minute. They were very nice sounding acoustically, and had a nice feel to them. Enough sustain to work with, and a nice pop on the front of the note. I may have to give them a try at some point on my office bass, since I'm often loaning it out to touring folks or people passing through, and they sometimes swap out the strings, causing "Dominant fatigue" when I put my strings back on. Hopefully I'll run into someone playing the EP weichs as well before the two weeks are up.

I woke up this morning and immediately ordered a set from Quinn. My animals were starting to complain about the strange squealing noises coming from my practice room.
Gotta keep everybody happy.
Damn, I love the way Animas pizz. :mad: They'll be in the gently used car lot soon.

FWIW, Quinn shows a 1-2 week wait.

I am on board the Weich wagon. After a year and a half of medium EP's, I thought a little less tension and more height would be nice to work with. Somehow you get the same volume with more articulation and seemingly more dynamic range along with a lot more woodiness. I am starting to guess the regulars were choking the top a little.

They have settled in nicely after a week. Still not comfortable with the slightly nasel G under the bow, but I think that will diminish as they age.

I just stumbled in here (I usually avoid the string threads) and wanted to join the EPW fan club too! I put them on the competition bass and it did alright... ;)


Great strings, but the gage identifier is wrong! The weichs should be medium's and the medium's should be heavy's with a true light gage in development...imho.

Hmmm... i dunno.... Maybe purely from the standpoint of thickness, but not so much in perceived tension for me. I did 16 months on one set of the Evah mediums, and although they felt stiff at the very beginning, they softened up a lot pretty quickly. I think that some of their rep for stiffness is unwarranted.

The Weichs, which I've now been playing for quite awhile, really almost seem like a different string altogether. Much more "live", less damped maybe. They're flexible without feeling flabby like Obligatos.

I agree that the EP regulars soften up quite a bit. Still, my experience squares with eroy's sentiment. To my hands on my bass, the EP weichs feel like "regular" strings while the EP regulars always seemed somewhat heavy-- especially the G. I was never too bothered by what they chose to call them-- I just like them both but prefer the EP weichs. :)

My unschooled opinion is most bass all have a different geometry equation to deal with. One of mine plays too stiff with Obligatos while the other set up similar does not? So I too was hoping for something with a little less tension. It's odd that one bass set up with the same specs is easier to play with Obligatos, but that's basses. Neck set and a half dozen other items the experts here can elaborate on are factors.

You're not a woos, your bright enough to feel the difference instead of just muscling through the gigs in pain or fatigue.

Yup, as I seem to keep pointing out, there are huge potential interactions among different strings and basses. This all seems rather timely-- here's why. After rehearsing last night with my regular combo, I developed a blister. Wow! It's been a long time since that happened! Well, the weather has been crazy here in Connecticut with it being the wettest June since 1913. I noticed that the weichs seemed especially tough. Actually, I think it's time to lower the height just a bit. So there you have a change just within one bass. These things we love are, after all, huge hunks of wood. :)
