Ever hate a song so much you'd risk being fired?

Here's the odd thing - my alarm went off 15 minutes ago & "Call Me Maybe was on.
I agree it's insipent - but the sad thing is - if the crowd wants it and you can play it. it's sort of unprofessional not to.- the good news is that most of the time songs like that go away after a few weeks- silly pop songs like that always get airplay, and everyone can dance to it.- but i doubt anyone takes it seriously - like 60's bubble gum music. fun to listen to but musically vacant

Strangely enough I charted out "Santeria" and "Call Me Maybe" last night. Maybe I should quit twice? Unfortunately it's my project so I can't.

BTW anybody who has any doubts about "Call Me Maybe" being popular go check out how many Billboard charts it's on :eek: . Oh, and I still think it has a great video and they do "unplugged" versions on YouTube that're very good too. They don't seem to take it all that seriously - I'm not sure why all you all do?

I listened to it again and frankly I don't think it's that bad. I would never buy it but I wouldn't have any qualms about playing it either.

I'll fire a musician who won't play what I as a band leader demand. I don't give a rat's ass about your opinion of a song. Suck it and be a pro, or don't get a call back. That being said if it's a cheap gig then hell no! :rollno:

The following is where I provide an example that inspired the QUESTION
Our BL mentioned this request and suggested we learn it (ok) and maybe play it at our next gig (hell to the naw). My other band members felt the same way. So we left the rehearsal AGREEING that we would do this song at the private party and then bury it.

So, as we're setting up for last night's gig, BL says..."word has gotten out that we're working on "Call Me Maybe" so don't be surprised if we get a request for it". I said " They can request but I'm not doing it"

So, sure enough, one table starts asking for it. BL says "think we oughta give it a shot?" I say "hell no". I don't usually curse, so when I do, be sure that I mean it. So he starts polling the other band members so I cut in..."Maybe you misunderstood me....hell f^%}ing no. I'm not playing it."

So then we announce and then play our last song. We had skipped several songs because the venue wanted to close a little early. The small crowd that's left shouts for one more. In between the shouts for one more are the three words I'm coming to dread. "Call Me Maybe". I gave the BL a "don't even think about it" look and suggested doing a song we had skipped. We did the song I suggested and it went well and we finished and packed up.

This is the part where I acknowledge I may be a little over the top on this thing and state that WE WILL DO IT FOR THE CLIENT THAT IS PAYING US
My disdain for this song could very well be irrational, but it's real and growing. We will do it at this party and I will try like mad to get it stricken from our set lists.

This is the part where I ask if anyone feels this way about other songs, which is really the question being asked

Really? A Carly Rae Jepsen song? I can tell you with no hesitation that if that was the conditions for getting a paying gig, I'd be a pro-bono artist. Hell to the naw, as you say, is correct. Not a chance in hell I'm playing ANYTHING involved in this beibermania crap. Besides, call me maybe is heavy on the strings, you have a strings section playing in the orchestra pit? hahaha Stick to your guns on this one my friend. I'd hate to see any grown mans set list turn to foo foo songs about giving a guy your number... :eyebrow:

That's like saying that my generation was defined by Hason and Mmmbop. Remember that song? Played the dog **** out of it on the radio but it's not what defined the 90's. Rest easy, Jepsen will fade away just like all of the other "internet sensations" and good music will prevail, it always does.

And before anyone responds to this, I realize that "Good music" is dependent on the person listening to it but c'mon, no one, and I mean NO ONE thought mmmbop was really a good song...did they? Teenagers are a powerful force with nothing but time to call and click and text in requests for crappy songs but that doesn't make them good. That makes them popular with people who are worried about HS drama and which boys are worthy of taking them to prom. :D hahaha

Sounds like a good idea - few people play that song but I bet as long as your crowd is old enough to remember it, they love it. I think with all the crises and grey-brown plaid shirts in the world today, there's a lot of nostalgia for the really fun 90s songs which bands could exploit but few have the guts to try. "Be My Lover" and "No Limit" have done very well for me, I think that was roughly the same time period.
