Ever hate a song so much you'd risk being fired?

Hard to believe this thread still has a pulse. Anyway, some of the stuff on the docket tonight....

  • Blurred Lines
  • F*** You
  • Moves Like Jagger
  • Nextdoor Neighbor Blues
  • What I Got
There's a few more that I'm just not remembering. Not the greatest songs ever, but we make 'em work. Some have actually become quite fun to play.

"Nextdoor Neighbor Blues" is an interesting one. I am starting to like Gary Clark Jr, but not this particular song. The bassline on the original is a snoozefest. Root note 12-bar blues. Of course, the upside is you can get very creative with 12-bar blues. I worked up a completely different approach to 12-bar blues that can add a bit of tabasco to this pork chop without stepping on the guitarist's minute in the spotlight.

Actually most of us did. :D

Besides, you are COMPLETELY missing the point. The point is not that if you are in an all originals death meal band you should play mustang sally just like Wilson Pickett, the point is that if you are in a cover band trying to make money, you should play what people want to hear.

I play in a cover band. Doesn't make me a whore. Makes me someone who enjoys and appreciates good music and is willing to bring it to others who also enjoy it.

Nothing wrong with originals either. Most covered songs started out as originals somewhere.

Wound up not doing this gig.....venue called and asked for a reschedule since the Tigers / Red Sox Game 6 got moved from a 4:30 start to an 8:00 start. They had a band in last Saturday and found that the crowd was more focused on the big screen TVs showing the playoffs than they were in the band.

I was never at risk of being fired, but two songs I refused to further play was "I'm on Fire" by Springsteen and "Soul Sister." (Can't remember who does that one.) It's not that I hate the songs so much, but those are two songs that our band just doesn't do good. I've been with these guys since May and we've never once had one, proper rehearsal. We do pretty darned good considering (some things are really good) but the two mentioned songs need some work. Both have keyboards of which we don't have, so they need a bit of thought. But without a practice to make 'em right I'm not playing them.
