Ever heard of a Gilbert Bass?

I recently was 'given' a bass that is stamped Gilbert on the headstock and 'made in japan' on the neck/body plate. This looks like a very accurate copy of a Fender Jazz Bass. Beautiful black, block inlay fret markers, the neck is bound, and the hardware all scream 70's Fender Jazz bass. Nice weight to the body-I think its alder and beautiful maple neck.
Has anybody ever heard of a Gilbert bass? These guys either had a license for making fender parts or copy things to a fault because even an old fender jazz pickguard fits this thing to a glove. I really like the bass but can't find any info on a japanese guitar manufacturer that used the name "Gilbert"
