When I was 18 (1983), I bought a used Fender - beat up '75 J body, P neck. Someone had removed the pickguard, slapped some filler in the holes, and BRUSHED varnish over the clear coat. Dimarzio neck pup, and (of course) a Badass bridge. Ugly, but played and sounded great. I gigged it for 20 years, then got a Lull P4, since I had some money, and wanted a nice P, and something lighter. The Fender just sat in my closet.
Last winter, I tried to restore it to its original glory - stripped, sanded, filled the grain, and polyed the body (varnish had seeped through the checked and discolored the wood, buy a little bleach helped some). Put on a vintage style bridge. The pup was waxed into the cover, so I kept that. Tort guard and thumb rest. Sure it's heavy (almost 11 pounds), but it's amazing. Now it's the Lull that spends most of the time in the closet.
35 years later, and I'm back home.
