Ever sell a bass, then unknowingly buy it back?

Cool story, glad you got her back...

Way back when ('74 maybe?) I sold my '66 Hofner and immediately regretted it. So a couple of years later I decided I had to have another so I started searching the want ads and eventually found one so I went to check it out and sure enough it was my bass so I bought it back for $150.00. The bass had been through a couple of other owners since I first sold it too and was none the worse for wear. Strange things do indeed happen....

When I was in college I sold my first "good" guitar (a Gibson Sonex-180 Deluxe), to a member of the faculty. Seven years later I was coming through the town again and looked him up for lunch; he still had the guitar and sold it back to me for what I paid for it. It was much the worse for wear and had a big Grateful Dead sticker on it, but it has nostalgia value to me far out of proportion to its market value.

Buying back a bass you didn't know was yours, though, could probably only happen in the brave new Interwebs world. For the most part, there aren't any basses out there that I sold, that I'd want back, although when I was younger my dad had a black/maple T-40 that I wouldn't mind stumbling across.

You know the gas is bad when...

1) I showed up to run sound and the bass player from four hours away had my old SWR Red Head.

2) Went to the consignment shop and saw a bass and amp I sold 13 years ago.

3) I own four bass rigs and generally play on an install.

4) I own four bass rigs and was looking at an Bergi IP cab.

I bought my first fretless (an MCI Intertek with a graphite fingerboard) in the summer of 1996.

I traded it back to the store where I bought it in the summer of 1998 for a 5-string. I bought it back from them less than a year later.

I traded it again in the summer of 1999 to a different store. I bought it back from them two weeks later when, while screwing around on it in the shop while hanging out, someone complemented my fretless playing.

I sold it on Ebay in 2006 for $80. The buyer was going to meet me at the airport during a layover to pick it up. He planned to break it down for parts. After hearing the story, he a.) let me keep it and b.) told me to keep the $80.

So I've sold the bass 3 times and still own it.

But I never bought it back unknowingly. That's too freakin' cool. I love "old bass returns home" stories.

Never had a bass story like that but my 1985 Jaguar was my object of affection. I ended up selling it in 2009 for $1000. I sold it for so cheap because the guy told me his grandiose plans for "restoring it." and I needed the money because I thought I was having a child.

A year later one of my mechanics was talking about the car. Apparently someone he knew had bought my car off of this younger girl. I said "Uh I thought a guy owned it?" He said "Nope. The girl bought it off of some guy who told her he paid $5000 for it and was selling it because the state was coming after him because he owed child support."

I wanted that car back. I was pissed and I knew that car was being used and abused. However by the time my mechanic tracked down the guy who owned it, he had already sold it - for yet another profit.

I was crushed...And to this day I still look for her on the open road.
