The other day at GC, I was playing out of a markbass 1x12 combo with a 1x12 cab as well. It soundedsurprisingly big and was plenty loud for most situations. That being said, my 4x12 cab isn't going anywhere anytime soon

I am 100% DONE with lugging heavy gear.
I have a Genz-Benz shuttle 6.0 and it's both incredibly loud and has great sound. I have a pair of the 12T speakers with it and I haven't needed the second speaker yet!
If I need more bottom, I might pick up a G-B 2x12 cab, but it will be light and portable.
At least for me, there is no need to carry heavy gear. My Sunn Coliseum-300 amp hasn't been turned on in more than a year.

I would LOVE to have a huge rig behind me. I was messing arround at the store the other day hand had a Hartke LH1000 running through a Hartke HyDrive 810, then took the effect send out of the head and went into a Peavey Triple X head (on the crunch channel) that was sitting on a Ampeg SVT-410HE cab. Talk about a wall of freak rock! We were shaking the entire store appart (I love downtime at the music store... those precious 15-20 minutes when no customers come in can lead to some fun times).
Unfortunatly I would not be able to run a rig like that in my band. The band leader likes to keep the stage volume down so the PA can do most of the work. So I have a little Fender Rumble 210 combo and feed a DI line from a BassPod XT Live to the FOH.

its fine when your 20 but 20 years down the road ya cant hear jack **** anymore..yeah i am feckin deaf.so i still need my big rig!
I've yet to find any small head and cab that can replicate the sound of my SVT and 810... Until then I'll stick with my SVT and 810.
I will wield my rig as long as I can and not even two Marshalls will hush my message of world domination through bass.

I like the big rig best but you need more space and money for those. So right now I'm hauling 230 lbs worth of bass madness around with me.

dont forget guys that bigger doesnt have to mean heavier these days too, my 8x10 markbass weighs 40 kg, its not hard to cart around town at all.
I played a show the other night where the bass player in the other band (a good player by the way) was using one of those little markbass heads and a markbass 2x10 cab, I've never heard a bass rig that sounded that bad, it was just farting out all over the place. Basically the little markbass rig just could not handle it.

Just my opinion, but I like real rigs that can take it. To each his own.

In a smaller venue he would probably be fine.
Just adding more speakers or a DI, or a Mic and he'd be fine.
No sense carrying a huge amp if the PA can handle it. Or having another 2x10 handy for the bigger venues.
Well I happen to be only bass player last night with a small rig ( BX500 and One GB Neox 112 cab ). They made jokes about it until it was our turn to play. After I got tough with the set the joke was on them, all I hear was that rig was loud and had good tone.
We opened for a bigger act from another state this week and the guitarist from their band came up to me after our set to tell me "There's nothing like the sound of your tube amp and cabs for bass, it just filled the house with fat bass juice"
The sound man told me later that I wasn't in the mix because my rig did the job on it's own, actually that's how I like it.
Still, the little amps are easier on the body and you don't need as big of a vehicle.

I posted somewhere early in this thread, but I'm actually up-sizing! Although, considering that my old head was in a road case and the new one isn't the weight gain was only really about 8 lbs.

I can understand people wanting to go easy on their backs, ears, etc when they've been gigging for years - my cover gig came about because their old bass player is having back surgery - but I'm still young, and nothing around today has the same sound (IMO YMMV yadda yadda) as an all tube amp through a big sealed 8x10. Maybe when I start getting weak in the back (and heavy in the wallet) I'll spring for an NV610 since they're supposed to sound a lot like the square-back 8x10 I have. Until then, I'm rolling this beast around.

I had this exact rig. Not only does it sound terrible and throaty, but it sounded terrible every time I heard someone else use this setup. (Two bassists I know in Pittsburgh use it.)
Sold that cabinet faster than you could say boo, and started looking into Aguilar. In fairness, I like the Little Mark; just that 210 cab was the poops.
I can understand why people are going with light weight stuff. I got my vintage Ampeg 2 x 15 folded horn delivered today and it took 3 of us to get it up a SPIRAL staircase...man, that was hard work. May have to look at getting something smaller and lighter if I will be doing regular rehearsals/gigs!!
Good music is the goal, big stacks of amps just make me feel better about not living up to the ideal.

If you can find what you looking for in a smaller rigs then why carry two tons, just to say you're a bass player and aways the last one out the door at the end of the night.
