Ex Drummer deleted the myspace page

We recently got rid of our drummer, because, among other things, he wasn't very good, and wasn't getting any better, and not trying, either.

I explained this to him in a very nice fashion, and he seemed to take it well (an initial wt*, but cooled down after he realized that he wasn't keeping good time).

So I get home from rehearsal for our gig tomorrow with the new drummer, and find that, while the myspace page is still there, there are no songs, no upcoming shows, and no friends. And I can't get into it (password changed). There's only a few people who even knew the password, and we changed it after we got rid of the drummer (but, unfortunately, only slightly, so I'd remember - won't make that mistake again). So apparently, he either figured it out, or my singer accidentally left the page up at work (he still works with the drummer at the radio station) and he messed with it there.

I've already started making a new page - Link Removed (songs are up, still need to put up bio and shows and the daunting task of finding everyone and re-adding them). And I ran damage control (emailed promoters and club owners to make sure he didn't email and cancel, and will be making phone calls as well).

If only assault weren't illegal. :hiding:

Hi.

That sucks, man. Hope he didn't do anything "worse".

When our singer decided he didn't want to play with us anymore, he cancelled a few gigs. Said the band had broken up to the customers. I still totally ignore him, after almost 2 years and that bugs the hell out of him. And always when we are in the same biking event and he's had "a few", he feels the need to bitch about it. Sad, really sad.

Regards
Sam

well, live and learn!!

of course, I once got canned from a band and deleted the myspace page - BUT in my defense, I built the page, did all the work, created all the artwork and they ****ed me over (worked someone in behind my back and fired me by EMAIL. And why? Not because I wasn't good, but because I DARED to sometimes disagree with the lead singer/wanker!). Heck, I was the guy that brought them together! It was my f'ing work that got most of the gigs!! What dicks!!

Anyway, I wasn't going to let them benefit from my work. They weren't going to get my logo, etc. Not a chance. So poof went the myspace and webpages. POOF. They should've thought of that. Actually it all doesn't matter now. I moved away and am in a huge band in another State. They are playing a rotation of 3 really small, mediocre bars, 1 of which is really a restaurant. The best revenge is living well! it felt good at the time though!

but if he didn't create and maintain the page, it was dirty. You should've changed it the day before you canned him.

Some folks can justify just about anything . . . :scowl:

PS -- the myspace page listed on you profile seems to have been deleted.

Hey, at least I admitted it here!

I'm not "justifying" it. It was my page. My work.

If they had treated me like an adult and with respect, it would've gone down different. They didn't.

So I owed them nothing. And they weren't going to benefit from my work.

In bands, in relationships, in business, treat people as you wish yourself to be treated. That's how things can be made to go better.

How you judge my actions? Irrelevant to me. It was several years ago now. A distant memory.

The situation for the OP in this thread seems different - it wasn't the drummer's work. He just exacted some revenge!

I wouldn't do it again. Why? Because I only "show up, plug in and play". I won't do people's or bands' webpages any more. It's not appreciated in most situations. And it was a lot of work!! So I just don't. I'm much happier now. I don't worry about planning, promotion or anything. I just do my part well and have fun!

Whew, at first I thought you meant he deleted the account, that would've been catastrophic!

... (an initial wt*, but cooled down after he realized that he wasn't keeping good time) ...

I would guess he "cooled down" right after he thought up his plan of revenge.

Good to hear you're getting it back on track, good luck! :bassist:

I don't think you did anything wrong QORC, as you say they should not benefit from your efforts if you were mistreated. After the breakup there was no way you would get compensated for building it, and if you were indeed "owed something" as a "judgement" for your improper dismissal, that's a good way to settle the score. IMO.

Krish, any work such as a website (or music, a painting, work of fiction, etc), is completely and entirely owned by its creator, unless there is a contractural transfer of ownership to another party, or agreement with others of shared ownership. If no such transfer occured or agreement existed, QORC is free to dispose of HIS website in any way he sees fit, just as you are with your property.

Frank Sinatra once said " The best revenge, is Massive success.

Thanks, Chris. That's the way I saw it. None of the rest of them lifted a FINGER to help me with the page or any of the promotion. So I wasn't going to leave them the benefit of all the work I had done.

Actually I didn't really delete the page. I just deleted all the artwork, eliminated the song samples and deleted all the "Friends". I didn't post a diatribe. I didn't send evil messages to people about the band.

I just left a blank page.

I don't blame you either. You did all the work + they treated you pretty shabbily.

Firing by email? I mean c'mon!!!

Unless, of course, it was donated toward the joint effort which usually accompanies band membership. A gift given cannot be un-given. Just depends on how you see your level of participation, I guess.

I've had band breakups, and of course, walk away with the physical equipment I brought into the project. Once we almost came to blows over the return of a 90 minute cassette tape. That's when I decided such things were petty, silly, and a waste of my positive energy. Do I demand that any ideas I brought into the band no longer be used?

Only if you define "joint effort" as "QORC (me) does everything related to designing the site, promoting the band, getting recordings to all members, arranging for sound, arranging set lists and the rest of us just have to show up, and then stab QORC in the back because he dared to disagree with the Lead Wanker", then yes, that's "joint effort."

*smirk*

It was my work. Entirely. If they had treated me right, it wouldn't be an issue. But when you get a long shank in your back, you don't want to pass on your good work to benefit those that put that shank into your back.

Call me stupid...*shrugs*

I've once had it take 3 months for MySpace to get around to actually deleting a myspace account. It was marked for deletion and not showing up for those 3 months, but not actually deleted.

Only '"we don't really care, it will deleted when it gets around to it" type email responses from them'.

Yeah, the moral of the story here is really to change all passwords prior to firing a bandmember. It's kind of like when you get fired, they won't let you out of the building with your passcard. Letting a bandmate out of the "firing" while they still have working passwords is a BAD idea.

Live and learn.

Thing is I DID change the password - but like I said, he either figured it out, or my singer was careless and left it up on the work computer (or he wasn't actually careless, and stepped away for a split second to get something - the drummer has a history of messing with his facebook account whenever he can. My singer had stepped away from the computer to grab something from the printer, and the drummer immediately hopped in his seat and messed with his facebook).

So, new myspace account - and I've been heading him off at the pass with the promoters and club owners that he knows about. So all the shows are still scheduled as normal.

Sounds like there's a couple of examples of good lessons in the usefulness of inter-band agreement contracts that define who owns the rights to websites, logos, etc. and how band members are hired and fired.

You might still have had something like this happen, but perhaps a contract stating the negative ramifications of them attempting to take your work would have prevented the firing.
