I too moved into the 5er category.

I had the 2003 stereo. I am now playing the yamaha TRB5 (original series), The MTD Kingston, and the Millenium .

I've owned my 74 4001 since 1978 and still use it all the time. I never moved away from the Rick, but I have added some other basses for different purposes - specifically, a P-bass for slapping. While I had no problem slapping and popping on the Rick, I seem to lose too much volume when I switch from fingers to slapping (I think the action is too low for that and the vibration of the string gets dampened against the fretboard on the Rick).

I started playing bass on an EB3 copy, horrid, that I bought from a Radio Shack-like catalog. Got rid of that, bought my first decent bass, a Guild B301. This was around the time I got into Rush, and I had to have a Rick. Bought a 77 4001, Jet Glo like Geddy's, and I had a Badass II put on it, and replaced the tuners with Schallers. Sold it a few years later, as well as the Maple Glo I bought and similarly modified. I'd lucked out and found a '71 Jazz Bass with the black blocks, maple neck, so for me the Ricks became expendable. Boy, do I regret that. I now have two 4001s, a '76 Autumn Glo, and a '77 I'm having totally rebuilt a la my Jet Glo.

Why did I get rid of them? The Jazz was just capable of doing more in terms of versatility tone-wise than the Rick given the music I was playing at the time. It still is, but I just love Ricks. Nothing on the planet sounds like them, to include my pricy Alembics.

There were plenty of excellent brands mentioned as replacements for Rics but I think if there were more 4004s available for people to check out that less people would completely abandon the brand. The same basic character with a modern kick......love 'em......

Now I like those, no binding and what looks like a forarm contour. How is the weight on those 4004s?

For all you ex-Rickenbacker players. What have you moved on to and why?

I started with a no name at 14yrs and had to have a ric after seeing the beatles and later working in Uk with the Jam and others as money was more available I got my dream 2 of 4001's in consecutave serial numbers as a stage set. After being attacked by theft and other misfortune I lost all me guitars.

After using a Pbase and a YamahaRBX for 10+ years I finally have my rics back and I am stoked.
One danger with RIc bases is that one tends to look after them than members of your own family.

If any one has a "Maton JP4 Fretless" congrats they are fantastic to play
