Excellent players who play a cheap basses

Has anyone come across a Excellent player who pulled out a bass that you thought would "bite the dust" but after hearing them play this (what you thought was a sorry bass), it changed your mind about that particular brand of bass.

For example, I hear how people kind of bash squire, Rogue but there are some who have come across a player who played one and were blown away, comming to the conclusion that its not so much the bass as it is the player playing it

I wouldn't call him a great player, but you can't argue with the success of Pete Wentz and Fall Out Boy, he plays a Squire.
