Excellent players who play a cheap basses

In interviews, Hook never had much good to say about this instrument. Cheap or not, it wasn't his preferred axe.
Not a big band anymore but I recently saw the bassist of Honeymoon Suite play and he is still using his old Squier Jazz bass he has been playing for 20 years.
Also, many of the good and up and coming Jamaican reggae bassists seem to play MIM or Squier basses. The bassist from Toronto's Bedouin Soundclash also plays a Squier much of the time.

When I first put GHS Bass Boomers on my ancient Ibanez Roadstar (P Bass copy) that I had just bought for $75, it sounded amazing. No dead spots and perfect tone. Therefore, good strings on a cheap bass + a great amp = a great tone that probably surpasses (or at least sounds just as good as) all those natural wood aircraft carriers I saw on another recent post. I still bring this bass to gigs as a backup, too. I have some basses that I've paid a helluva lot more for, but then again you have to watch 'em like a hawk at a gig when you're taking a break.
That's the main reason I bought my Squier......
I'm still taking my Stingray to most gigs but once I finish the mods on the squier it's staying nice and safe at home.
If the Squier gets stolen I couldn't really give a rats patooey!!!

The only reason he's not reguarded widely as a great bass player is because he didn't do "BASS SOLOS" and stand center stage with his hair on fire.Not everyone thinks Bill Wyman was a great player but he inspired me. I think he used a cheap Framus for their first album (de-fretted possibly?) and just listen to the drive he gets on Carol, Route 66, etc. Not bad for the early 60's.
No, he was too busy groovin'. How common.
He's my hero though.

Nope, Yamaha never made Rickenbacker copy basses. It was a Hondo. You're confused because Hookie is a known user of Yamaha BB 1200S basses.

Errr you overlook the fact that he played a modified Fender for MANY years and a Peavey for many years first. Berlin certainly did not play his Dean for 30 years.

Back in maybe late 80's early 90's I played one night on a bill with Uncle Tupelo in Boston. At the time the bass player for that band was Jeff Tweedy now the leader of Wilco.
That night he was using an 80's CIJ Squier Precision. I was playing my fancy G&L L2000. Today we know Jeff's Squier bass to actually be a nice quality piece but at the time I'm sure he was thinking of it as a good low risk bass to take out on the road . Now he's touring the world with Wilco and I'm sitting in my computeroom ...still playing my L2000.

Pico, current bass player for Murphys Law, plays a Squier P/J bass in black, and he plays the piss out of it. I don't know how that bass survives night after beer soaked night, it really sings................for it's supper. Seriously though, I've seen them live about 11 times in the last 2 years and thats the only bass I've seen him play, not even sure if he has a backup, and if so he doesn't bring it on tour.....................

I haven't had time to read all the posts but I think Bakhiti Kumalo (call me Al) used a cheap Washburn frettless when he recorded with Paul Simon.

I have to correct you here. Lynott's Ibanez was not a Blazer but a Roadster. Modified to carry a mirror pickguard. You can tell it's a roadster from it's mini humbucking pickup which is the same kind you find on Ibanez Musician models. The Blazer never carried that pickup.
And speaking of the Ibanez Blazer, that's where I named myself after because I owned one for many years.

He has been an inspiration to me as well, and there was nothing wrong with his bass playing.
