Existential GAS Issue?

This week, I was at an academic conference in Orlando to do a presentation, so the day before I had to work, I rented a car and went to Bass Central. Bass Central is like a candy store for a bassist, and I checked out a fair amont of gear. The two basses that totally impressed me where a white and maple DJ5 ($1395) and a MTD KZX5 ($1,795), both were incredible bang for the buck basses that I may well buy depending on how gigging goes this year. I also played a passive Lull Jazz five that was an absolute work of art although I felt the setup was a bit too high. At $2073, it was a great deal for an American boutique.

The odd thing was that after hanging there, I really asked myself, "why I am I doing this" on the way back to the hotel. I played some nice basses, but I found myself going "so what" (and not the Miles song either!) That evening, I had a great time playing my MTD Kingston through my Basstrainer just wondering about all the GAS.

For pleasure. It's fine if you can afford it, but can be destructive if it's pinching you. There's no need here; it's all want. Emotional, not rational. You used the kid in a candy store analogy and it couldn't be more of a bullseye IMO.

Thanks, Talkbass really allows me to set back from myself and gett another perspective.

GAS does "pinch" me a bit, and that gets tiresome, although I do truly love to look at and talk about gear.

I feel you Cheese. I love to look and talk about gear as well, but i've noticed that I exhaust mysellf when looking for a new bass to buy. It's all I think about 24/7 until I buy one.
