Double Bass Experience with KNA DB-1 pickup?

I was experimenting with my DB-1 yesterday. ( I got lots o time) If I want to hear the pickup itself, I just use the Paradriver for the 4.7 meg ohm input. I don't turn the preamp on at all so I get the sound of the pickup, not the eq of the pedal. I find it a more accurate way to hear the bass/pickup relationship.

My ears could be playing tricks, but I hear something like a mechanical rattle or buzz ... something vibrating sympathetically with the bass or its strings.

I think you're on to something. It's like finding a rattle in a speaker cabinet, I'd try lifting the lead between the pickup and the 1/4" jack so it's not touching anything. Then I'd check the tailpiece by dampening it with your

hand in different spots., it's a real PITA but eventually you'll find something that's buzzing. Hopefully.

Here's Rick Wolf's demo from another thread. By comparison the KNB-DB1 sounds much fuller and the timbre is more pleasing. So, I think you just need to play with it a bit. Just my take though, no two basses amplify the same way.

I'm using superior bassworks deluxe dirty guts to get a dead thumpy sound instead of a metal wound string like Rick.

Is anyone else able to hear the strange woolly goodness in the bottom end?

A few days ago I worked a bit more with the DB-1. I saw some advice here about putting it on the Treble side of the bridge. Two things. 1. I like the DB-1 more on the Treble side. It sounds just a wee little bit more like the Full Circle. Still not quite as "stringy", but very usable tone. It's also more even sounding on the Treble side. I'll have to try it out someday on a gig. lol 2. I realized my bridge wing slots aren't perfectly flat on either wing slot from the factory. I think I'm getting enough contact though. More to come.

Reviving an old thread. I just got one of these pickups. I was using a Rev Solo II filed down to about 4mm. I found that the Rev Solo sounds better thin rather than thick. I tried a few different things with this pickup. I settled with installing it on the E side bridge wing. To my ears, it sounds as good if not better than the Rev Solo. Installed in a New Standard Cleveland with high action plain gut G and D and Eudoxa A and E into a Mark Bass CMD 121P then into the PA.
