Experience with MJT?

My (now) one and only guitar is an MJT build - musikraft neck, MJT finishing on both. I love their work. If I ever go the custom bass route I'd definitely consider MJT.

I've have 3 bodies done by MJT. My project manager was Payton on 2 of them.
Terrible communication. As one person said, I could ask 3 questions and only get a response on the first question.
My first two builds were to take 10-14 weeks. They took 22. Ordered a week apart.
I ordered a Shoreline Gold P. That body had to be made.
A week later I ordered a 54 P. That body was in stock, unpainted/raw.
I told him proceed with the 54. Ship them separately. Nope, he ran them together to "save me shipping costs".
My third bass body, I dealt with a gal. Forgot her name. That time I contacted them to ask if they had any Jazz Bass bodies "in progress". They sent me pictures of a 3 tone sunburst they had. They relic'ed it the way I wanted. Gave me a good price. Have not got the bass yet from the guy that assembles my basses for me(out of state).
In November of 22, I tried a new guy Bloom Doom Guitars. The guy that owns it is a former MJT employee.
Dustin Bloom is his name He does nitro. He does not seem to offer as many color options. He told me 6-8 weeks from the time he gets the body, and he delivered right on time. I have not seen the finished product yet, as that is also being assembled by the same guy doing my Jazz.
He is pretty picky, but says it looks amazing.

Payton is also my project manager here and it has been a really bad experience. One of my questions from the pictures was if checking was applied because I asked for no checking. The question was ignored, the body was shipped, and I just received another reply where they confirmed they applied checking. So I already know I am going to be receiving something different from what I asked for and will have to go through the hassle of shipping back and forth and waiting longer etc... infuriating...

There is a Facebook group on MJT. I've read where NUMEROUS people complain about Payton.
I'm going with Bloom from now on. The only way I would buy anything from MJT is something already painted on their EBay store. Which.... they've been posting a TON of bass bodies in the past few weeks. Daily, posting bodies

Looks nice!! How was your customer service experience? So far it has been pretty horrible for me, which is disappointing given that I've mostly heard good things from people around here. My project manager sends the wrong updates, does not reply to my questions (or will only reply half)... I just received pictures of the finished body, and I asked questions/expressed concerns, but instead they just shipped it to me while leaving half the questions unanswered and without addressing any concerns... it has been a really frustrating experience for me to that point that I don't think I would use the service again even if the body that I receive is perfect (which it probably won't be given they left open questions/concerns from me).
i had payton. EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEMS!
MJT jazz bass build
i tried to escalate it and email matt jenny and he just referred me back to payton.

Payton handled my project and the experience has been pleasant and efficient. This isn't to belittle anyone else's experience. Sometimes is might take a little longer than 24 hours to respond but it is typically same day or next day. I also asked that the bass be aged slightly more due to an error with identification of a reference image, (which was my mistake). They said it wasn't a problem at all, and so far have not asked that I pay for my mistake. The body looks great now but since I was finishing the neck assuming the age and damage was a little worse, it is at least somewhat important that the two match. When I get it finished which shouldn't be too long now I will post pix. Also my project is mostly on time. Maybe a week or two extra, but since the body was a special project I expected at least a little delay in them creating something they haven't done before.

asking them to age more isnt a problem. it’s when they age too much without paying attention to instructions or communicating first and then having to redo everything that is a problem.
A worse problem. Still a pain. I work with clients all the time that are asking you to do one more thing, one more addition to the report, just when their samples have been put away and the project billed. It's a pain. Still easily more doable than starting over.
