Experience with MJT?

I just ordered a P bass body and Warmoth neck to be finished and reliced by MJT about a week ago. Has anyone else had any experience with them? If so, what was ot like? Did they send update pictures as they were making your project? How long did the build process take? Cheers.

I have done several projects with MJT. Two were with Wildwood bodies and a few more were Fender that I sent, including a 1960 and a few early 70's (one recently from '75/'76ish).
They have always provided me with progress pictures.
The most recent, a '72 Precision alder body, arrived there on March 5 and is shipping back to me today.
The one before that was an ash Precision from '75 or '76 and that arrived Sept 17 and was returned on Nov 7.
These were not "builds", they were refinishes. Both were stripped and sealed by previous owners and both required stripping before the refin.

How did your build turn out? I just ordered up the same exact combo of warmoth neck and mjt body. I was a little concerned because my fender necks are 1/16th of an inch narrower than the warmoth. The warmoth didn't fit the MIM Player P bass I bought. I let MJT know this however.

Mine came out great except for the dreaded and typical dead spot at the D on the G string. Musikraft neck with no graphite rods. Other than that, with a David Allen pickup, all the Pbass tone I could ask for. Tone monster. Deads pot was less pronounced with a bit heavier gauge strings. Better tone with vintage threaded saddle bridge than HipShot KickAss Bridge. Had to move bridge back a few millimeters for better string fit on the bridge.

It turned out great! I had to sand the neck pocket a little bit to get the neck to fit. After that it played well, my only problem was the neck weighed so much. I have a Musikraft neck at MJT now getting finished. It should be ready any day now since it’s been 4 weeks or so since it arrived. Warmoth necks are very wide and heavy in my experience. I will most likely be shimming the sides of the neck pocket for the musikraft neck because the pocket is very wide now.

I've heard that about Warmoth necks I got the slim taper and put lightweight hipshots on it. I haven't weighed it on a scale but holding it and the MIM Player P neck they feel close in weight.

Your bass looks great!

Both the Spitfire and original '72 guards are very nice -- richly colored and detailed with a lot of depth.

@9mmMike - the combination of sonic blue/tort/cream colored pickup covers on your '72 is really stunning! :)

Looks nice!! How was your customer service experience? So far it has been pretty horrible for me, which is disappointing given that I've mostly heard good things from people around here. My project manager sends the wrong updates, does not reply to my questions (or will only reply half)... I just received pictures of the finished body, and I asked questions/expressed concerns, but instead they just shipped it to me while leaving half the questions unanswered and without addressing any concerns... it has been a really frustrating experience for me to that point that I don't think I would use the service again even if the body that I receive is perfect (which it probably won't be given they left open questions/concerns from me).

Mine wasn't great and I wouldn't use them again. The reason I did is because I wanted a nitro finish on my project bass. That said I had to send the body back twice, wrong color (never did get it exactly right) and primarily incomplete drilled holes for the pickup wires and the grounding wire under the bridge. They charged me both times for the shipping to be returned to them to fix their mistakes. The second time I put my food down and said this isn't right. (still never offered a refund on the first return). All this back and forth made it so that the project took almost 5 months longer than it should have. Absolutely terrible experience frankly. I'd just buy a warmoth at this point and forget the nitro finish. Or buy a body from MJT that is already in a finished state and you know that is what you want.

Hmmm. I am mid process with them right now and they have been pretty responsive on my special project. They did not have a 72 tele bass design and worked with their manufacturer to get one done up. They sent pictures of the unfinished body so I could make sure it looked right before they moved on to undercoating. It should be headed to the pain stage shortly and so far time wise, they are at least closeish to keeping their schedule despite it being something unique for them. I don't expect any color issues, well... because I picked black, but my experience has been good so far.
