Exposed Core Strings for Ken Smith basses

Which strings are you going to use? So aside from the fact I don't own a Smith I do know that as long as they are good strings and they aren't too long or too short you're going to be just fine. Worth noting that Ken has a set of tapercore in his line of strings. They are made specifically to fit his basses and they work great on many others. They are great on my Warwick. Lol I would just make sure whatever exposed core you get are the same taper length as the Ken Smith strings or close as possible.

One of the important considerations is to make sure the tapered end is the right length for a proper fit. Too short, and the fat part of the string ends up riding over the saddle, rendering it useless; too long, and it can cause intonation problems and weird overtones.

Most tapered/exposed core strings have roughly 2" of taper, while it is my understanding Ken Smith strings have 2.5" of taper. You might want to take that into consideration.

The important thing to consider here is Ken Smith "long scale" is 38" in winding length (ball end to taper/silk), except for low B's (37"), while most other manufacturers' "long scale" is 37"-37.25" in winding length. DR is the other company whose "long scale" is longer than most at 37.75" in winding length.

The super steps have a very even response and a smoother midrange than most traditional strings. Their midrange growl is different. If you want a more traditional sounding exposed core, GHS makes a good set (albiet they are brighter then the LaBellas).

Also of note, GHS is who makes the strings for Ken Smith.
