Expression Pedal Use

What do you use with an expression pedal? Modulation type effects?

Thinking of getting one.

Are they used to vary gain (volume) at all?

If an effect has a gain/level parameter that can be controlled by an exp pedal, then yes.

You can't use one as a volume pedal on it's own.

It affects the expression parameter or it gets the hose again.
