"Extra Something" Pedal for Synth

It also probably makes a lot of sense to ultimately sell all of my modulation pedals and go with the Modfactor. I see them go pretty cheap used, and I'd be able to use the midi out on the MP-201 to sync all of its effects to tempo as well as change presets.

Jufros-- if you haven't already done so, make sure to tell Mario about your MP201 so that he can make the Freq input suitable for active CV use. Mine came in the stock passive configuration and it did not work with my MP201 (unlike some of my other pedal which do work for both), so I sent it in and he switched out the input for a nominal fee. Just putting that out there :)

Just to be clear: all CV inputs are not created equal, and the Photrons Freq input (cutoff) can with either the MP201 or a regular exp pedal.

Mine has extra inputs for the Width and Speed, but they work with exp pedals only, not the MP201- He said that they could not work with the MP201 without serious redesign, though I don't know if that has changed. The Frequency (cutoff) input on the other hand can work with the MP201, but mine did not work with the MP201 when I got it, as it was in the stock configuration that only works with exp pedals. I had to send it in to have it switched from passive CV to active CV input.

If you've already notified him that this is to be used specifically with the MP201 then you're all good, but if not, I'd recommend letting him know as soon as possible.

What do you guys think about the PS-3? I can think of a few different ways that I could use it but I'm not sure how well it will work with an octave pedal in front of it. If I do use the Moog in a sub frequency loop and have my fuzzes and Photron in another loop, I could potentially put the PS-3 first in the dirty loop. I'd be able to detune of or interval stack on the input signal and then feed this fatter signal to the Orbit, Brown Dog, or Noise Box and Photron. How about BOD clean to the Moog and then a delayed BOD signal going to the Photron? I've got plenty of expression pedals lying around and now that I'll have the MP-201 as well, I could do some really crazy things like slowly manually pitch shifting up/down to a note while an MP-201 LFO is sweeping the filter on each 16th note. For that last idea, a Whammy might be more appropriate, but the PS-3 just gives you so many possibilities without taking up much space at all.

I had a momentary two month or so Cave In obsession during my freshman year of high school, so I know exactly what you mean when you say the PS-3 really sounds like a PS-3. It's all over Antenna and yes I agree that if you use it like a Whammy, it's very gimmicky and arguably in poor taste. I wouldn't really be using it for that too much though. I'm more interested in it's blatant (especially for live use) double-detuning capabilities and what +/- 15-20 cents on a clean octave signal will sound like with the Orbit and Brown Dog. With the Pulse Synth (eagerly awaiting), I might be able to cover some similar ground with it's PWM, but I know it won't really be the same as a static "triple saw oscillator" type of sound. Putting a chorus before fuzz would probably produce interesting results, but most chorus pedals I've seen can't really fatten a clean octave tone and I already know that fuzz->filter->chorus will sound MUCH different than chorus->fuzz->filter.

I got the chance to play my with an Eventide H7600 in my rig a few days ago. It was a completely different world of effects processing. Controlling it with the MP-201 via MIDI is just too powerful and without too much hassle, I was able to create some incredible and unique sounds that I could never even have conceived of. Unfortunately, the H7600 costs about $4k.

But the Eventide Pitchfactor can be had for under $500 and has both MIDI and USB control options, both of which the MP-201 support. I have some gear to sell and I'm going to pick one of these up. They insane units, but I had always considered them too big, too much money, and too impractical. Experience has shown otherwise, however, so I'm making moves yet again.

Modulation wise, I might switch back to the nano small stone, Maxon Phase 90 clone, or pick up a Bassballs. The Source Audio is great but something about it isn't quite right and it's pretty big.
