Facebook probably knows that if they charged for there site, they'd have no one on it! same with myspace, youtube twitter ect. It costs to have a site on the internet and you have to pay for it somehow?

The internet is massive and the only way you can really hide anything is to not put it on there in the first place?

im kind of unsure how any of it can harm me as i dont put anything on the internet i dont want any one else to find or know?

I probally get a few spam emails sent to me because of it, its only a couple more boxes i have to tick when deleting emails which takes a few seconds

iv lost out on some awesome deals the internet has as i refuse to type my numbers into a computer just incase they can be found and used by some one else


Just to make sure though, if i have missed something in the article please some one tell me as if some-things going to harm me, i don't want to be apart of it

I'm also having trouble seeing the rub. I'm not putting credit card or bank account information on my profile other than that I really don't have anything to hide.

You put a band in your "Music" section and it links to another page that has a cut and paste of wiki article,.....big deal,...it's no different than me posting about a pedal in the effects subforum and linking to it's page so you don't have to google it.

Is there some sort of conspiracy afoot? Or are we just trying to make a statement that we cannot ignore what is marketed to us (I'm a master at ignoring what is marketed to me). Is this a play to take away my personal freedoms? Is this the next step in many to an Orewllian Distopia?

I'll stand corrected but from my house it looks like we are making a mountain out of a molehill.

I would say that facebook is trying to be like myspace. Its the new pink, so to speak. But really, its the same thing, everyone just went from one to the other, blindly, because everyone else was. I dont find Myspace annoying to navigate, but that one time I was about to make a facebook for my band, I looked at the homepage, and said 'Im getting the hell out of here'.

I used to room next to one of the founders of Diaspora. He was also into math, so we would talk about random theoretical crap. He was into some really whacky stuff. One day we were talking about the state of the economy (a year before the collapse) and he told me to stick all of my money in Iceland's dollar. LOL good thing I did not take his advice. I wonder how much money he lost......unless he pulled out before they went bankrupt. I wish him the best, and I hope Diaspora takes off

It's not so much about "private" / "not private" as "private" / "friends only" / "public". Facebook keeps giving people tools to restrict who can see what then moving the lines on them once they've got the information.

Putting truly private information out there is foolish, I agree, but there's a lot of things that were once "friends-only" that have been moved to "public", often by stealthy means such as leaking your stuff out through the applications your friends use.

For me, even though FB sometimes corrects these things after the user outcry, the long-term trend is obvious. I'd also rather not do business with people who keep making promises only to break them later, often with some deceptive BS intended to fool people who take their statements at face value. Make no mistake, FB users are not the customers, they are the product, and FB will do no more for them than the minimum necessary to stop the herd thinning.

In the end, I didn't delete my profile - I just stripped it completely. That way I can check for messages once a week and be sure that no-one is impersonating me to my friends (which has happened in the past to others).

Thats a girlfriend problem, not a facebook one. My ex-wife hated any and all female friends, whether they were real life or online. She was just far to insecure to accept that she wasnt the only female in my life. I dropped her like a bad habit.

I'm not that upset about it. If you want to make your life public by hanging it all over web pages, go ahead. If not, don't. I don't understand the compulsion people have to tell everyone they're going to the toilet...and THEN to get upset about it when people actually find out what they wrote.

No one NEEDS a Facebook page to reach their friends. If you want one, have one. If not, not. I have one, and I don't put anything on it I don't want others to see.

Email works. Text works. The phone works. Use them if you don't agree with Facebook.
