Facebooks Gone Rogue; Its Time for an Open Alternative

Thanks man. I don't know what happened there. Yeah that little exchange had me rolling when I first read it.
I deactivated my account a long time ago. At first, I thought Facebook was really neat and "innocent". It was a convenient way to link up with long-lost friends and to share pics and group discussions etc. But it's gone berzerk.
I had a whole list of people who wanted to add me as a "friend" and I'm thinking, "***, you are someone I would have to watch my back from..." Then I realized that absolutely everyone is on it, from bosses to authority figures, to the tabloids at work (aka nosey gossip kings and queens).
There's a potentially voyeuristic, stalker element to it as well. I had a friend who also quit FB because his ex-girlfriend was pestering him and his friends etc, and he just couldn't take the drama.
Sadly, 90% of my friends are on that thing, and it seems that they use it as their main source of "group communication". I'm still "in the loop" so to speak because if there's anything important, they know how to contact me. But it gets on my nerves that they feel this overwhelming need to document absolutely every single mundane thing online for the whole world to follow, which includes pictures that I'm in. It compromises my privacy. Depending on their privacy settings (or lack of), the whole world can potentially see my private pictures. People at my work or people who I thought were out of my life can check out my privacy, check out my girlfriend for example etc etc, and it's frankly not any of their damn business. To say that it p!sses me off is an understatement.
As I mentioned, at first I thought FB was a really cool tool. Then I started to become a little more concerned, and realized that it's a tool that needs to be used with caution. Now I outright dislike it. It is sad because I can see the positive potential it has. But the fact that ithe whole world is on it with a "document-everything happy" mentality, combined with the corporate (and potentially governmental?) data-mining agenda, and you have a recipe for disaster. Do I think that everyone has sinister intentions? Absolutely not. But my experiences on it has been more stress than it is worth, so good riddance for me.

I've been reducing my FB footprint over time as it's got more and more apparent what sort of people are running the site. Tonight I finally bit the bullet and deleted my profile. Simply in terms of time saved it's a win.
Same here.I've been trying to delete my likes from my profile, they just keep coming back
You know, it may not be quite as convenient as Facebook, but you can still email people, use sites like Photobucket, or maintain your own site - it isn't that hard.
We used to have a web site we did with iWeb on our Mac. It worked great. Anytime we updated something, it sent an email to whoever was on our list.
We may go back to something like that.

I read the article and all the comments in this thread to try and get it but i just don't.
Is it that facebook is selling our information to companys in an attempt to try and sell us stuff we are interested in? Isnt that what 99% of internet sites do anyway? How else can they fund them with out users paying for being on there?
Facebook probably knows that if they charged for there site, they'd have no one on it! same with myspace, youtube twitter ect. It costs to have a site on the internet and you have to pay for it somehow?
The internet is massive and the only way you can really hide anything is to not put it on there in the first place?
im kind of unsure how any of it can harm me as i dont put anything on the internet i dont want any one else to find or know?
I probally get a few spam emails sent to me because of it, its only a couple more boxes i have to tick when deleting emails which takes a few seconds
iv lost out on some awesome deals the internet has as i refuse to type my numbers into a computer just incase they can be found and used by some one else
Just to make sure though, if i have missed something in the article please some one tell me as if some-things going to harm me, i don't want to be apart of it

And you could always go back to MySpace, but IMO that's not the same. Once a viable alternative becomes available, then Facebook will be forced to change or die. It will happen, but you must have patience.

MySpace is worse, IMHO. I HATE that place.
This Diaspora thing looks promising. I hope it gets out soon, because Facebook is killing my soul...
MySpace used to be the internet equivalent of Hot Topic. It still is, they're just trying to be like Facebook. Myspace is more annoying to navigate, IMO.
