Facebook Weirdness

Several years ago, we had a family get together and there were some extended family there that i see once every few years at best. Same day I get new friend suggestions on FB...the extended family members. I didnt "check in" or anything like that or even open FB and this was an automated friend suggestion. Then shortly after, my wife said she was just talking about a product with some coworkers and then ads started popping up in FB for that product "randomly". It was really creepy.

Well--Americans have handed over the spying to profit making corporations. Feel better?

Other countries too!

But only if you sign up for those services. When browsing, you can choose not to leave cookies. Sure, that means you will have to manually log into websites and/or not have the items in your cart next time you visit, but that’s a small price to pay for privacy.

Facebook cross-tracks virtually every other site you visit online, and, while it's no defense, so does virtually every other site you visit. They are also tracking your location, and, if you believe some theories, are listening to you via your phone. (I was talking to someone about my sore shoulder and the next day I got ads for shoulder exercise equipment on instagram.)

The latest iteration of the Mac iOS has built in tracking blockers (mine says it's prevented 169 trackers from following me in the last seven days). The other thing which can help, some, is to NOT sign in to other sites via your FB or Google accounts. That gives them permission to watch everything you do on those other sites.

When I was a kid, the adults would point to Communist Russia and China and say "see, those countries spy on their own people." Well--Americans have handed over the spying to profit making corporations. Feel better?
NEVER use a different(google, fakebook) account to sign in. You just coughed up your login and password.

I’m convinced that Facebook (along with Twitter) is doing more damage to our society than pretty much anything else has in recent history. I keep my personal FB account open so that people can contact me via Messenger if they want and I have a couple of band pages up for promo purposes, but I don’t spend (waste) any time on my “feed”.

I spoke with my 70 y/o dad about modding a cheap bass on the phone. He never looks at instrument stuff online. 10 minutes after our conversation, he had adds for bass. Not just bookface. They do seem to lead the way on privacy invasion tho
They still deny using enslaved microphones on devices.
We play a game in my family where we draw words and have forced conversations about something we’d never really buy. First person with a linked ad wins. Last time my wife won with Alaskan seaplane fishing. I’ve won with maple candy and auto upholstery schools. Just pick words and insert them loudly into a conversation. The app doesn’t know you’re joking. Make sure it’s something you would have never searched before. Have fun. As long as you don’t disable the app it will eventually work.

Last week an acoustic project that we’re trying to get off the ground were discussing covering the song Hunger Strike. Our vocalist said she wasn’t real familiar with the song, so I opened Amazon Prime music on my phone. Hunger Strike was cued up, ready to play.

Is Facebook now stalking my online behavior on other pages, like this forum?

Yes. The main objective of Facebook’s developers is to keep people on Facebook more than any other website and keep the addiction moving. They absolutely study which website you click on while leaving FB and try to promote similar content to keep you on the website instead of clicking to another. Then they will incorporate that type of content into your feed and monitor if you stay on the site…if you do, they’ll throw more of it your way. Kinda standard for social media nowadays. It’s all about the money and keeping users addicted equals more money.

I have avoided FB for many years, and Messenger too. When I get a new phone, I unload or disable all unnecessary apps. I browse the 'net with Duck Duck Go, which blocks tracking.

I hardly ever see ads for anything I don't want to see. Nothing on my phone, either, but I typically try to avoid using the internet on my phone. I use it as a phone, and a camera, and nothing else. Location is off, as well. ;)

100% agree. I quit all stupor media except the few bass forums like this one. Once I got to thinking about it, all fakebook was doing was wasting my time, and often pissing me off. I finally got it thru my thick head that arguing with someone on fakebook about anything accomplishes nothing except make me old. And they all, Google, fakebook, twatter, instascam, are nefarious as hell. They do NOT have your best interests in mind. All they are interested in is selling your personal data and every move you make on the internet to as many other companies as they can. So eff all of that. It's been 2 years, and guess what? I now know I really don't care what that woman I went to high school with I haven't seen in 30 years is planting in her garden. :D

Duckduckgo user here, too.

Unless you are taking steps to cover your tracks, you should assume everything you do on the internet is public record and will be written about by your future biographers.

Think about this for a second: When history students write about an historical figure, they go through all of that person's papers and letters, to figure out who that person was. We've definitely all had the experience of being in history class, and reading so-and-so's love letter to their spouse, right?

100 years from now, when history students try to figure out who YOU were, they will go through all of your Facebook, Instagram, Gmail, TalkBass, pr0n, chats, text messages, etc. (which will presumably all be archived and cataloged for future generations of researchers).

You should assume everything you do on the internet, or your phone, is permanent and will be available to the public someday.

And yes, that includes the AOL, Friendster, and MySpace accounts you haven't touched in years. Future historians are going to know what MySpace was, and they will surely use this information in their biographical research about you.

Funny and sad at the same time.

Back in the day, Pavlov had to bring the dog to the bell.

These days the bell brings itself to the dog.
