I mean, yeah...it can be argued that chalk counts as gear but as far as rock climbers are concerned, climbing shoes and chalk do not count as gear.

I suppose geography wins. I've barely climbed steep hills, so I don't know.

Yup, free soloing has to do with no ropes/harnesses/protective gear. I think chalk and climbing shoes are pretty ubiquitous, but hey, maybe there's a barefoot climber out there. lol

What Alex Honnold did is nothing short of incredible though, I can't even imagine doing that. My cousin and his good friends are avid climbers, and I've hung out with them, heard stories, and have tagged along with them before. I'm not a climber, so the things they do seem pretty extreme to me. To them it's no big deal, and they absolutely love it. What Alex Honnold did, though, is even pretty unfathomable to people like them who climb all the time.

I wouldn't call this 'fake news', but just another uninformed headline writer who is ignorant of geography. See stuff like this quite regularly by these cub reporters or so-called journalism majors. Can't tell you how many times I've seen an article about a particular country or region but the article shows a map of somewhere completely different.
