Falling in the Shower

Brad.

Was a particularly nasty boy, and he tortured me endlessly back in High School. It was called "bullying," but it ran into the psychopathic. I was a loser in my early 20s, and I took great delight when a girl I had dated, who was a neighbor of his, and was tortured more than I ever could be by this boy, announced to me at a local watering hole, that he had died in the shower, slipping and hitting his head, and ultimately drowning. I took far too much delight in the tale, and while I later came to regret that, I still couldn't be sorry that he died.

Because he was the kind of guy who could turn out to be the next Hitler, and there wasn't a single time that in the shower that I didn't think of this absurd cautionary tale.

I've been falling lately, due to my rare brain disorder, and this morning I was in the shower, and then I was on the floor, with the shower knob broken off in my hand; hot water squirting from the hole I had created, and the shower curtain wrapped around me in a fashion that was quite impossible, and I understood that when I fell, I turned the water to what in cartoons could only be called "too hot," and I needed to take immedate action, or I was going to endure at least second degree burns all over the regions of my body where such burns just couldn't be any more unfortunate.

It scared me so badly.

I was beginning my housing search. I had a disastrous relationship with my sister, having called her a racist recently, and I am engaged to a woman, who I frankly don't deserve, who wants to take care of me, and she's 10 years my junior and still as beautiful as the date day I met her, and I don't know she wants to take care of me, or even said "yes" to my proposal, but things changed this morning with my shower fall.

I realized I need to live in an assited living facility, and Leah is not going to able to take care of me at all, and I texted the sorry details to my sister, who is good at planning such things, and we buried the hatchet right there, and I am entrusting her with my entire life, giving Power of Attorney and she will treat me right too, and I'm so sad that it had to come to this.

People, I'm not going to be saved by a miracle. This is it. I'm on my way out and it's going to happen sooner, rather than later, I'm going to die soon.

The only positive thing I can think of is "hey at least I got a lot more lifw than that punk, Brad."

That's as much of a positive spin as I can put on it, but there's another thing that's kinda great and it's this:

All the time I was worried about my brain going under. My mum died from complications of Dementia, and I didn't relish that fate at all. But that's not the Doctors see in my tests. I am going to get steadily worse, symptom-wise, but it's a physical thing not a mental one.

I get to be as brilliant as I ever was until right up until the day I die.

And my sex life is as good as it ever was.

And I thought this was going to be a story kinda like the time when I was stupid enough to take a stepstool into the bathtub to do a little tile work. It was a very short story with a dramatic ending, thankfully this side of death or even serious injury.

You have all the positive thoughts I can send. I'm glad you are making decisions while you still have the opportunity. I wish you peace on this next stage of your journey.

I had a childhood friend who lived almost 4 years past what the doctors gave him.

Such as you, he was mentally at 100% right to the end.

He didn't fight it consciously, there was nothing to fight, nature had decided his fate for him, he was just along for the ride.

But his outlook was always positive and I truly believe that positivity worked some behinds the scene magic for him. He was grateful for the life he was given, the friends he had and the experiences lived.

Seeing his journey, I'd say you are doing it right. You have the capacity to think clearly, do what you can to hang on to that positivity.

Keep playing the low notes MM, even if they're in your head.

Sorry to hear this Mellowinman.

I can remember my father(RIP:crying:) falling in my shower when visiting me in North Carolina. He died from MSA(Multiple Symptom Atrophy).

MSA basically has you trapped in your own body. Your brain tells your Body parts to move but the signal never gets there.

in his 60's, my dad could run circles around me on the Basketball court before the %^&$%% disease got a hold of him.

He was a great man as I believe you are. "Bad things happen to good people". Prayers being sent for you and I hope you have as many happy days ahead of you as possible.

I like your attitude and I like you (from what I have just read)

Counting your blessings will always leave you one step ahead.

Thank you for sharing.
I am sorry you have to go through this and the pain it will be bring.
I am glad you are loved.
You deserve it.

Friend:

Sounds to me like Brad needed to try again.

I do not know your story and just recently joined this community, but feel compelled to respond to this post.

I am suffering from progressive neurological decline due to a rare auto-immune condition. If fact, it is the reason I took up the bass -> I was struggling to fret the 6 string. FWIW - after a year's work on the bass I can play the 6 string again some.

But this post is not about commiseration. See I am on my second chance. About 15 years ago I nearly bled out. I was also in the bathroom and remember what I believed to be my final thoughts (concern for loved ones) as I slipped into unconsciousness and fell to the floor. I crossed over into the warmth and light before being pulled back into the cold and hard mortal realm.

Similar experiences and stories vary, but I can tell you that I no longer fear death and will be ready when it comes. Additionally, from the collective energy I felt, I have confidence we are that here on Earth to learn to love.

Love. Be loved.

You got this brother.

I hope that if I ever get the same kind of news you did, I can hold my head up the way you have.

Hang in there, man. Here's hoping you have little pain on the way out. Thank you for walking to the beat of a different drum, and sharing some of that crazy $#!+ with us.
^All of this.

And now I have an even greater appreciation for your cover song thread.

Sorry to hear this.

Just a word of caution on power of attorney, medical proxy and executor of your will.

When my dad got sick, it caused a very VERY bitter and petty family feud that dragged on for years. By the end, we only communicated through lawyers. If there's any beef between your sister and fiance, it might get ugly. The stress of the situation tends to bring things out. Make sure your will is up to date and very thorough.

I know it's not pleasant to think about, but I've seen friends go through hell like we did because their parents weren't specific. Don't leave a mess for your family to cleanup.

Brother,
I continue to have deepest respect for your courage and for your talent.
I'm wondering if the jump from "I fell in the shower" to "I need to move to an assisted living facility" might be a bit premature? I know that my own initial reaction to major issues can be a bit drastic.
That day (for assisted living) might be now, or it might be later. Your call. It's worth exploring what you can do to "saftety-fy" your home as it is. There are a lot of modifications that can be done, and are regularly done for people with similar sets of limitations and issues.
Just a thought, my friend.
Wishing you the best outcome whatever your choice.
