I say Flea for many reasons mentioned. Bold memorable playing style, sound, looks, even the stage name. Music spanning many generations. Even to a non-musician without an ear for bass, it's pretty hard to miss what he's playing.
I think a lot of others are more known for their singing. Either that or they are just playing a guitar of some sort.
Rush had quite a few radio hits but for the most part they seem underground to me. I don't think the average person ever heard of Geddy.
I never heard of Jaco until reading Bass Player magazine, and never heard any of his work until listening to Joni Mitchell "Coyote" on a compilation disc that was given to me. Even then I didn't know it was him.
