The title of the poll asks "Who's the most famous bass player to non-musician".

According to you, if you would ask anybody on the street to name you a bassist, which would be the most popular ?

I think very few knows who Roger Waters is anyway. Same with Dave Gilmour. But they definitely know who Pink Floyd are/was. But by "sound" only, not by pic or instruments. They were a very anonymous band publicity wise. They just think like the one story and legend that was true that some record company think it's two guys, all of Pink Floyd (in which de facto they were for some time) like in the song "Have a Cigar", when someone went "Oh BTW which one's Pink?" People just thinks "Pink Floyd" and leaves it at that. Paul and Sting gets the nod but definitely not because they're bass players. They're songwriters and lead singers. If you show a pic of Roger Waters to people they think it's Richard Gere. I think Paul and Sting gets equal, and shares the first spot.

What's that you say, the lyrics of "All About That Bass" are not about the instrument at all, but rather a paean to chubby girls?

Like "Everyone" ... hey, I'd bet if you travel to far east, Asia, and even South Americe, Africa, no one could give a **** of anyone of them, and have never heard their songs. To the "third world" so to speak, so it's not "everyone" by any stretch. Who knows, maybe Jesus played bass somewhere down the line?

It's probably already been said, but considering many non-musicians when trying to make small talk comment on my "guitar", i'll assume that most of them have no idea that McCartney played bass, or any other musician for that matter.

Here they are, your biggest selling albums on planet earth. Start picking those famous bassists out!

I'll start with Roger Waters, who can boast the third-best selling album of all time. Rather a stupendous achievement.
But as he found out when he left 'Floyd, the public didn't know his name, let alone his instrument.

While there is no popular cult of personality as such for bass players, I think the good news is that the electric bass does not appear
to be going anywhere soon. I watch an evening of TV with the Missus and I hear grooving bass lines all night long -- on the commercials, on the theme songs, and especially as underscore to much of reality TV, since bass slots in so nicely under dialogue.
Bass continues to do the bulk of the heavy lifting while not getting nearly enough credit. But it is essential.

Electric guitar, on the other hand, sounds "corny" according to a lot of my twenty-something friends, who consider stringed music
to be largely old-fashioned. The guitar hero posturing we subscribed to in earnest, they see as more than slightly kitchy and thus worthy of ironizing.

This is a pointless question because the average non-musician does not understand or care about the difference between a guitar and a bass.
