Famous Big Muff bass lines

Discussion in 'Effects [BG]' started by bigchiefbc, Apr 27, 2010.

  1. Guys, what would you say are the most famous/iconic bass lines that used some variant of the Big Muff?

I know Cliff Burton used one for Anesthesia, the solo in Orion, the intro to For Whom the Bell Tolls, etc.

As for Muse, what tracks are thought to be just Big Muff (i.e., no synth)?

Also, I know that Robert Sledge used one in a bunch of the BFF songs (One Angry Dwarf, Battle of Who Could Care Less, etc etc)

Well, you already mentioned Robert Sledge, but personally I think the song that best shows him using his Big Muff is Army.

Lots of Dirk Lance lines have Muff all over 'em. "Morning View" in particular, even though didn't totally love the songwriting as much.

Hysteria sounds like it's got no synth to it.

    The state of denial.
Two more muffy Sledge jams: Kate and Song for the Dumped, which features the sound of his bass coming unplugged.

  6. Yeah, I forgot about Army. Good call.

  7. kaputsport talked to Chris himself, who verified that Hysteria has the Deep Impact blended with the Muff.

Supermassive Black hole might be just muff, same with Citizen Erased. I also think Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want might be just muff. Those are off the top of my head I'm not really familiar with the other guy though.

  9. Thanks, I'll give those a listen.

By the way, I'm not just looking for those three guys. I was just saying I already know that those three used Muffs. I would love to hear about more guys that I didn't even know used a muff, or that I just forgot.

    Atypical, not a typical...
Citizen Erased is more than a Muff... I think Deep Impact into Muff...

Back then, they didn't play to backing tracks, or have a keys guy (Morgan).

United States Of Eurasia is muff...

    Same with New Born...

  15. im not sure about the new wolf mother bassist but the old one (chris ross) used an NYC muff and an english muffin

The dude from the Raconteurs is Jack Lawrence iirc. Not trying to be smart, just thought I'd save everyone a google.

That would explain why I had so much trouble getting the tone right then, could never get the low-end tight enough with the muff distortion!

Exit Music (for a film) by Radiohead. I believe the bass fuzz is a muff -- awesome bass line.
