Are you serious? A timer? That's really laughable. I can understand if they were worried about electrical fires if they were consistently wired bad but that's kind of silly putting regulations on things because of an old wives tale. That's like the government banning watermelon consumption so that watermelons wouldn't grow in the stomachs of young children and killing them when you ate the seeds.
 
The idea of fan death is indeed silly, but I'm sure many Koreans would find some of our own cultural beliefs to be ridiculous as well. A fear of fans is harmless, but refusing to vaccinate children is not. Fan death itself may be used to explain or even coverup deaths for which there is no other explanation. That, too, is not unique to Korea. For example, many cases of Sudden Infant Death syndrome are due to child abuse, and unknown causes.
