fat sounding bass

ok, i am looking into getting another bass.

budget about 200-300 pounds (400-500ish dollars)

want it sounding quite 'fat' dont want a p-bass the necks are too thick.

i like playing closeish to the bridge (love playing at the 'sweet spot') but dont want a bass where the strings are extremely tight near the bridge so its like trying to pluck something solid.

dont mind what colour but would like a choice if there is one.

it would be an upgrade from a starter bass so i wouldn't want anything too crap.

something available in the UK!

got any ideas?

I would save my money and go from a starter bass to something quality and a bass that you will use for a long time. You don't have to do this, it's just what i did and it worked out well for me. eBay will also save some money on an expensive bass.

A P-bass is the original "fat" sound. I used to think the necks were too fat too, but lately they have been making them much thinner. My 1999 P-bass has a nice slim, fast neck (it surprised the heck out of me). I'm a Jazz neck kind of guy and avoided a P-bass for years, but my P-bass feels really nice.

one question about the Peavey Millenium BXP, as its string-through body, would i need to get longer strings or would normal ones work fine?

normal ones work fine. They've arranged things so the the through body strings are held in a ferrule with the ball the same distance away from the saddle as it would be when done top-loading... one thing though, if you change over to top-loading (which you can do on the BXP bridge) you should remove the ferrules and keep them in a safe place. They're only held into the body by the strings, remove the strings and they fall out...

another question about the peavey, the active version, i've never used active electroniccs before, so i have a few questions.

what sort of a sound difference will there be?

how long will a standard 9v batterey last?

what the hell do i do if the batterey runs out during a song?
