faulty strings?

I bought a set of R Lo-rider stainless steel 45-105 strings a week ago and yesterday when I put them on, they sounded as they were on my bass for at least two weeks, maybe more. They didn't have the metallic sound I am always expecting to hear when I put them on. They were most like boomy but in a fuzzy way, didn't have clear lows. I noticed that something was wrong even before I plug my bass to my amp.

Has anybody else experienced familiar problems with strings? Is there a chance to be a faulty lot? I don't think that's in my mind cause we had a rehearsal last night and the others noticed a low end not wanted fuzz when I spoke of the problem.
