Two of my punk picks:
Klaus Fluoride from Dead Kennedys
Darryl Jenifer from Bad Brains
They both served the songs well, and could get pretty aggressive. A few really unorthodox, yet catchy bass lines from both of them.

I'm a big fan of both genres, specially their extreme versions (street punk, hardcore, crust, grindcore, death metal, black metal, thrash metal, etc...)

Ah good!!! Not just me then.....
I did a post on cronos asking for info cause he's amazing But cldnt find out much atall yet about his style/gear ect)
Oh and I'm practise to play metal/punk style eventually so any tips for future use cause don't think most guys here know it that much thou they do know music generally like!!
Most of these bass players use a pick for the attack (and some used to be guitar players), I started with fingers and it's a good option when you drop your pick
. Also, anything that makes you sound "filthy" qualifies, try to get a really aggresive distortion/fuzz pedal, and true to the spirit, try to find one that you can say it's your own. I have only seen Venom once and ue t the crowds I was far from Cronos to see his gear, but according to books like Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult his sound started when he used guitar gear, especially distortion. Same goes for Scott Carlson from Repulsion who has used a DS-1 ever since.Remember that these are genres that rely on energy and transmiting a "gut feeling" to the crowd, so don't practice standing down and don't be shy about making your bass scream (asI expect you crank out all of your gear), so take into account all the physical preparation you nedd to make a good show.

Yeah I started free play till I realised I'd have no fingers left so ive got pick now too!! I'm not a "music reading" type more like an animal/instinctive player that its got sounds in there for me to find!! Anytime my friend, I'm also not a music reading type and prefer to go for the "drive". Regarding strings, also try to be inventive, thick strings might do the trick, in my case, I found that using flatwound strings gives a distinctive darkness to my distorted attack.

My bass gets great murky/scary sounding distortion sounds on my guitar amp.....some guy on here said cause I had gain & boost buttons on loud it made a kind of " overdrive" sound.....
I thout I'd gotten myself a bass amp so wasn't knowing what I was doing) as a newbie tbh But i loved the sound I thout (nasty) basses were meant to sound like that!!
I'm just practise with a bass amp now cause its bigger/solid But I'd rather go back to Be4.....I'm so tempted even if it blows up) to get the nasty sounds again on guitar amp!! Ive got savings £££ so I'd just have to replace it I'd guess!! I think they say "play clean" if your newbie But my feeling is opposite

Do whatever it takes to get that audible violence accross, in my case I rent a space to practice and live use whatever amp the venue has, but I use a Sansamp BDDI in ampeg like settings to get the angry lion roar, and if it goes straight to the mixer it sounds just like what I want

Opinions are like a-holes, everybody has one, just do whatever feels right in your ears and in your guts (specially in your guts), if you get technique cool, and that being said, some of the most innovative techniques come from people not listening to what they're supposed to do

I am reviving a dead thread... but this is a good subject. These questions are always a bit tough for me because of whether or not we look at whether or not the bassist on their own plays a punk or metal style of bass or is it based on the band they play in regardless of their standalone style. For me... and this is where it gets muddier... is that I may like a bassist for this "one thing" they do or characteristic of play they possess.
For instance, Dave Ellefson. For the most part, I can't say I am a fan of him as a bass player specifically. I don't dislike him at all. ...but the string attack sound he got on Peace Sells is just AMAZINGLY good. That's the thing that stands out to me. Steve DiGiorgio I really liked how, at the time of Death's Human, had this very "outside" way of approaching bass lines. It was unique in metal for the time. Matt Freeman, regardless of what anyone thinks about Rancid, has an aggressive style of walking bass that is just one of my favorites. I can listen to Rancid all day just to listen to his playing. Lemmy.... "the" Lemmy.... he had this way of driving the snot out of a song. It wasn't just the overdrive. It was just the way he played.
