I get along very well with many Japanese and the ones I have trouble with are the same as the non-Japanese I have trouble with; I love humble, confident people and very much dislike arrogant, self-important types. Both can be found in abundance there.
It's funny you mention Gaijin, because that's my friends' boyfriends' nickname! He doesn't know it though!
His name is Guy and she's Japanese so when we're talking in Japanese we always refer to him as "GuyJin".
At work we have nicknames for everyone else so that we never have to say their names when we're using Japanese. If we don't then people always turn their heads when they hear a name, wondering what we're saying about them.
