Somewhere out there is a weird gadget that you can attach to the bridge and it gives your fretted bass a quasi-fretless sound... anyone seen it?

My favorite gadgets:

My Gruv Gear Duostrap Neo. It pretty much saved my playing career after multiple back surgeries;

Dunlop Straplocks;

My iPhone 4S running Jamup Pro;

Apogee Jam (interface for my iPhone);

LEDs are also fun, but not really a gadget since they're usually part of the build.

My ebow and this little brass duck my brother brought me from Iraq are probably my favorite toys. The duck makes an excellent slide that I can use easily on a single string or up to 3. He also makes an excellent keyboard player.

Might not fit your brief, but I find the Polytune app for iPad/phones etc to be excellent.
It's a tuner, and you can leave your outboard home, because you are always going to take your phone anyway.

My favorite bass gadget is a leather covered belt buckle. Looks like an oval metal cowboy buckle but it's covered in cow hide or some other (non marring) animal skin and prevents buckle rash on the back of my basses.

I feel like a mousepad that old would disintegrate after a couple uses.

In all honesty my favourite 'gadget' (not a pedal or processor) is a couple of strips of neoprene mouse mat which I wedge under my strings for a mute sound. I bought the mouse mat in the '90s for £1 and haven't used it much since, so it comes in quite a lot cheaper than the bassmute and does the same job. And I don't have to glue it to my bass.

I highly recommend mouse mats, everbody.

I have a Hercules clone stand I use with my Mandobird for that reason--shaped like the Firebird/Thunderbird--just smaller--electric solidbody mandolin.

i bought the stand to use up store credit--& try it out--then when I got my Mandobird--i was what I used...
