I've read that in many places too (apparently, Kirk mentioned that in an interview given to Guitar magazine in 1987). But, if you listen to the bass only track for Orion, the intro does feature what is heard in the actual song's intro.

A bit off topic, but the bass only tracks are kinda weird: e.g. Cliff doesn't play gallops in Battery. Even so, when Rob Trujillo offers to play Battery in the auditions as seen on the SKOM DVD, Lars responds by asking him, "You can play that fast with your fingers?" From what I hear in the bass tracks, it's not really speedy at all.

Never looked into whos on bass for the recording but Johnny "Clyde" Copelands cover of "Same Thing". Lots of folks have covered it (me included) and I actually adapted his version after hearing it because of the bass lines. Very smooth simular to the style of the Barnie Miller bit. Doc

Here's another vote for "Whipping Post"; another good one by Berry Oakley on an Allman Brothers tune is in "Les Bres in A Minor." There's a rubato intro, and then his part is the intro to the "in tempo" main body of the song.
