I like Pictionary too.

Have you tried Pictionary with play-doh? You model the item you need to draw. You have to make some changes to how the game is played, like removing the verbs as those are difficult. Some friends in NH introduced us to playing it that way. It was really fun.

Haven't tried that. We have Dictionary and we have play-doh. Hoo hoo a new game to play.

As far as board games, I like Risk, Stratego, Othello, and Marrakech to name a few, but I enjoy playing dominoes the most.

I'm a Scrabble addict.

Star Fleet Battles is also high on my list as are most of the old Avalon Hills games, especially Rail Baron and Dawn Patrol.

Risk and Stratego rock but Supremacy is the ultimate for world domination ( Axis and Allies is a real close second for me ).

The board games Hunt for Red October and Red Storm Rising were very well done and you could combine both games at the same time which made for an interesting play.

I played a lot of the old Avalon Hill games. Talk about a time commitment. Panzer blitz would sometimes take a week to finish a game.

We play "Guess their Name?"
- everybody writes the name of a famous character or person on a piece of paper and puts it in a bowl. The more outrageous the better.
- if you want it to go longer, do 2 or 3 separate names each.
- sit in a circle, number off each person into group 1 or group 2 alternating as you go around the circle. (3 groups if you have more than about 12 people).


First round
- each person around the circle gets 60 secs per go.
- pull out one name at a time & describe them using words, as many words as it takes. Put that name aside if guessed correctly.
- you're allowed 3 passes only, but can go back to one you've already passed on. Throw passed names back into the bowl.
- tally up how many guesses your group gets correct.
- Keep going around the circle until all the names are guessed.



Second Round
- as above, but you're only allowed a ONE WORD hint to describe the person.
- this round requires a lot of memory... and lateral thinking.
eg. Pirate ->Jack Sparrow.
Conqueror -> Alexander the Great.
Basketball -> Michael Jordan
- add up your groups points.



Third Round
- no words, you have to ACT what the person does.
This round gets very funny.
- add up all rounds to see which group won.


It's great to play with children too - you just have to write names they'll know. eg. Nemo.

I used to have some KILLING chess buddies, but I moved away from them.

I guess people who like Risk are war mongers then.

I was thinking Risk, too. You just take everything including the money.
Which, if you think about it, they did to themselves. They put up the money to buy the weapons for the war and made a ton of money the conquerors come take away from them.
Reminds me of a Doomsday Prepper episode where the guy flat out states he is saving nothing and building nothing. He is arming up an training. He said he is going to just take what he wants from the preppers.

I recently played a few games of Cosmic Encounter, which has a lot of repeat playability and has some fun mechanics. My friend got a card that as long as he had it in his hand he could steal cards and ships from various places. If he got caught, it specified penalties. He managed to steal a crap load of stuff with only getting caught a couple times, but kept getting useless cards anyway.

If your family is into boardgames, you really need to start branching out. Settlers of Catan is fantastic and a really good gateway into some of the more advanced games. Carcassone is fantastic, too. Pandemic is a great co-operative game where the players team up to defeat the game. Sounds weird, but learning the game is easy and the game is surprisingly difficult to defeat! Ticket to Ride is another easy to learn boardgame. So many games, so little time!

My favorite game when I was a kid. I haven't played it as an adult. I wonder if it would still be fun?

Wooden Ships and Iron Men was my favorite AH game. Tough to find someone to play that one with.

Backgammon is good. Scrabble too.

When I was in the military every couple of months we'd play Risk. Special rules including drinking fortified wine. Mad Dog, Night Train, Thunderbird.

Never actually finished a game. They usually ended up in a flipped over board and a fistfight.
