Favorite "boutique" bass

I always take recommendations from people wearing stuffed animal pants! Nice!

I have owned the following:
Alembic (Series I, Elan, Distalette)
Fodera (Monarch)
Ken Smith (B.T., BSR, BMT, C.R.)
Pedulla (Penta Buzz)
Surine
R Basses
Steinberger (Stick)
Lakland
Lull
Pensa Suhr
and a few others
To me there is no bass in the world that plays like a Ken Smith B.T. from the 1989-1994 era. My favorite of all. I do love the sound of the Alembic Series I's I have owned.
However, these days I no longer own any of these instruments. I play Fender primarily because they fit any style of music music I play. I cant say that about all the botique basses Ibhave owned. But then again it's just my humble opinion.

Maybe it's just growing older, but I am really infatuated and inspired by the Rob Allen stuff, with the mellow tapes, the piezos and the rosewood bridges. VERY acoustic oriented:

Not a fan of boutique basses but if someone put a gun to my head…
Sadowsky does it for me, cuts thru anything and has a great tone for most situations.
I also have a pre-Gibson Tobias Basic 6 strings and an MTD 5-strings. Both are awesome instruments, almost to the point of being unforgivably cruel, you must play them flawlessly.
I don't own a Ken Smith, but a friend of mine has a 1990 neck thru, great instrument.

Alembic. My vote is a bit biased because my two Alembics are the only "boutique" basses I have ever played. I like the way they play and sound. The first one took a little while to get used to but it was worth the effort. Someone said earlier that the electronics are sensitive -- how very true. Alembics project exactly what you play. I had some sloppy technique and I sounded like crap before I cleaned it up. After that I love the way they sound.
Shawn May will make it for you. I just ordered one with no lines, but with blocks. Weird, i know, but he'll build em however you like.
I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation for those pants.

That looks more like about 16mm if I had to guess. The strings look way closer than a Fender 5, and those are 19 or 20mm. My Warwicks have 16.5mm spacing, and the strings look closer on that bass in the photo than they do on my bass.
